What a way to start off our 2008 Volunteer Trail Maintenance Days, which are sponsored by Friends of the Wissahickon!!! 46 volunteers braved the frigid temperatures and tested the leaders' planning, preparation and execution skills. You see, it is difficult to predict how many people will show up in this cold weather, or how well the frozen ground will cooperate with our tools. Thanks to quick thinking and organizing by those in charge, the day went off without a hitch, and we got lots accomplished. All told, at least 167 hours were donated!!
We want to thank the Wissahickon Wanderers group who showed up and gave excellent efforts. We hope to see you people at our future TMD's!
Here is what was accomplished:
-
3 trees cleared from trails
-
2 Rolling Grade Dips (RGD's) built to prevent errosion
-
Ivy vines removed from several trees which most likely saved them
-
Rogue, unsustainable trail closed with small boulder and other rocks
-
4 chokes installed to prevent trail widening
-
Many tons of rock hauled out of a ditch, moved up hill and staged where they will be used to pitch and build a retaining wall at a later date
-
Over a dozen bags of trash (litter) removed eliminating this pollution
Thanks very much to all the volunteers!!!
