What can be said about people who are so passionate about making the Wissahickon Valley Park a better place that they devote their free time to volunteer and do trail maintenance and improvements? Not enough, that’s for sure. You see, month in and month out, these dedicated and generous people join forces and get down and dirty and bring meaning to the human spirit. Ok, trail work is not rocket science, but the level of creativity, teamwork and determination displayed at these volunteer days rivals those who have gone to the moon…
Thirty six people, PMBA & FOW members, joined forces and contributed 209 total hours to tackle the trail project along the White Trail off of Livezeys Lane which we cancelled back in October.
Major projects completed:
-
320 feet of trail re-routed and restored. A large section of this length right off Livezeys Lane was closed and re-routed to the side slope and given a sustainable grade. Further down the trail the side-slope was de-bermed, the trail re-graded, and rock steps were constructed. Throughout the length of trail, rolling grade dips were built and large rocks were placed to better-define the edges and sheet water off the trail. The site lines are much better, safer. This trail now has sweet flow!
-
At the bottom of the rocky technical turn, which was left untouched, a large and deep mud hole had formed. This hole was excavated by the SK500, and at one point consumed the SK which had to be winched out! Once the hole was deep enough, a “French drain” was built with countless HUGE rocks. The surface of this former mud hole is composed of rocks weighing in excess of 500 lbs! Also, the water percolating off the slope uphill that was the cause of all the mud was routed to join a creek that runs under a bridge beneath the trail, so this problem area should be fixed.
-
Much trash and recycling was collected, especially down the slope just below the trail head. This included two tires, a basketball hoop, and a rusted water heater!!
