Equestrian Outreach Program a SUCCESS! Print E-mail

Jon Pearce, a PMBA Board Member, helped organize and successfully complete our first joint training program with the equestrian community. Jon has been invaluable to the club and our goal of engaging other user groups to reduce conflicts.

On Sunday 10/7 and at the invitation of Courtesy Stables, a handful of bikers gathered at the stables in Roxborough. This enthusiastic group of people discussed proper protocols for interactions when meeting on trails. After the introductions, this group of mountain biking advocates did exercises in the training ring with the horses, first familiarizing them with being around bikes, and then simulating interactions on the trails. A major goal of this day was to get the horses familiar with seeing and being near the bikes in several scenarios to make the interactions out on the trails harmonious and uneventful. In addition, making the personal contacts between the two groups goes a long way towards recognizing the other group as individuals, not just horses or bikes.

The value of this event is significant, and it is the right thing to do. We are making great efforts, thanks to Jon and his equestrian friends, to build an agreeable relationship with the horseback riding community. Several riders commented on significant improvements in biker cooperation in recent months. In fact, one rider said that because of our interactions she no longer sees just a bike on the trail – now she sees a bike and the rider. PMBA has shown that we are friendly, courteous, and we care.

That’s good stuff! Thanks to all who participated!
