It's true. Despite many miles of amazing trails throughout city parks,
and a large community of people who ride mountain bikes, the
Philadelphia area is one of the largest metro areas in the United
States with a noticeable lack of a dedicated organization representing
area mountain bikers.
But that's changing.
Back in October of 2006, the Friends of Wissahickon,
a local advocacy group that "...conserves forest and creek, restores
trails and preserves the [Wissahickon] Park's historical structures."
brought IMBA to town in an effort to build a demonstration trail
project in the park. Such an endeavor would help local mountain bikers
at least recognize the importance of trail stewardship, if not inspire
them to lend a hand. It was a successful venture, and helped local
riders establish a more solid rapport with non-riders in the park. And
of course, the Philadelphia Mountain Biking Association was born.
Interest is strong around town, and several local shops have already
pitched in to support the organization. The group will be become one of
the first chartered IMBA Chapter Member clubs. Aside from all the
insight, guidance and support that IMBA will bring to the table, the
Philly group will be able to receive 501(C)(3) non-profit tax status
under their association with IMBA.
The group is still in a formative stage, yet three clear goals for the group have been determined:
- Have fun and meet new riders
- Become advocates for mountain biking in Philadelphia, and
- Contribute talent, time and resources towards becoming good stewards of the local trail systems.
Mountain Bikers of all walks of life and skill levels are encouraged to join. You can find more details by checking out http://www.phillymtb.com/.
Plan on attending the next monthly meeting at the Manayunk Diner.
You'll find the meeting dates on the web site, and remember...the
Manayunk Diner serves beer.
