WOW! What a day. I believe Dave Dannenberg's preliminary estimate we had 70 volunteers show up for this project. Work went on from about 8-8:30 AM till about 3:30 or later. Hard put a number on how many thouhsands of pounds of rock was moved and set in place. 4 truck loads of fill crushed rock was wheelbarreled down the trail and poured in place.
The mud pit section by Blue Bell parking lot is completely re-done, and I personally believe is a lot more fun this way. Now go ride it, break it in and tell us what you think!!!
Way to go! Great work everybody!!!

Matt the manager from REI told me we had over 100 people come by I believe. I need to double check with him but I could swear that is what he told me. WHat a huge success! My back is a little sore but overall I'm not near as sore as I thought I would be. We must get pics of this awesome project on here ASAP!

I uploaded the best of my shots of the project to
http://picasaweb.google.com/jpearce08055/NationalTrailsDayJune2007
Altogether I had 179 pictures, but the light was so low that many people moved too much and some shots came out with the people blurry. I tried to get a representative set of shots including almost everyone. I haven't edited them yet, so they may change over the next few days.
Great project - I'm sure that everyone was impressed by the results. I overheard Dave Bower saying something like "Lots of people have looked at that spot, but only Dmitri figured out how to handle it", so it looks like we're getting some support from FPC as well.
I still haven't figured out where that section of trail is in relation to the rest of the trails, despite having Lou and Tom explain it to me several times. If it's dry on Tuesday I want to head out there and ride it. Anyone else interested?

Fantastic showing by PMBA!!! Thank you thank you thank you!! It was an extraordinary turn out overall and a LOT of work got done. In addition to the trail project, a lot of invasive plants were removed and vines cut from trees. Still, the most impressive was the trail work.
This was not an easy day to organize--on the side while working--and one of my major concerns was with leaving the project partially completed. It is not easy to estimate the scope of the project, the necessary materials and tools, etc. when one does not know who will show up or for how long or with what degree of energy and skill and whether it will rain. Imagine the position I (and by extension FOW) would have been had you guys all checked out at 1 or 2 leaving me alone to haul and load all the tools and equipment and then to explain to the park why the place looks worse than when we started and trying to figure out how and when to finish. Clearly the day and especially the trail project exceeded my best expectations and I must credit the PMBA contingent for making that happen. You guys really came through, working hard and steady well past official quitting time until it was truly finished. It looks great and time will tell us the quality of our engineering and work; we learn from mistakes as well as successes.
I haven't the time at the moment to thank all the individuals involved. It was truly a team effort. Check out some of the photos and you will see over a dozen people toiling on or near a small section of trail--and despite a good deal of planning and organizing on the fly, there was good overall efficiency, little waste, and no serious injuries. I felt really good about it all day, buoyed by your enthusiasm and energy. I worked about 9.5 hours straight beginning at 7:00 AM and felt good during most of it. (Sunday however I crashed for 2 hours in the middle of the afternoon; hope you all had a similar opportunity).
Not much else I can say at this moment. Thanks again for giving up your Sat ride time to work, and to work above and beyond the call. We will only get better at this over time, especially as we learn techniques and when Kevin Groves, FOW's new VC is on board and can focus energy directly on this stuff.
As to statistics, we had about 70 on our sign-up. I will ask Matt at REI how many he had. We hauled three loads in Tom's truck, at let's guess 1.5 tons each. I think I had 2-2.5 tons in my trailer for one load. I estimate that we also moved 5-10 tons of rock.
Below are links to some snapshots taken on my camera, some by me, some by others. As Jon said, low light. That and grabbing camera while simultaneously monitoring and participating in three different aspects of the work going on doesn't exactly bring out my best photographic skills.
Still, you get the idea.
Thanks again guys. You rock! See you out there.
Dave

Thanks Dave. It was a pleasure working with you. Everyone did a great job and it shows. We checked out the site today. It held up well to the storm. Nice and solid. Had some equestrian tracks that did little impact to the tread surface. So far everything is locking together nicely. We should start to see more exposed rock soon. All we can hope for now is that it stays low maintenece.
Great work day and a great learning experience.

I was out there today and updated the Picasaweb site with 5 new pictures. Still looks great - the dirt has settled into the rocks a little but it's dry and very ridable.

This section is looking better and better as it gets beat in.
As I was riding by today I noticed shortcutting that was done after some of our debris was moved out of the way. Hikers just can't seem to stay on the trail! I think some of it is dog traffic too. They are totally cutting out the turn that we armored and going straight down (through mud) toward the creek. I did not have time to stop and fix it today, but I may try to next time I swing by. If you go by and have time to throw some stuff in the way, please do. Thanks.

I'm really curiosu to see how both sites held up thru this downpour we had last night. Unfortunately, I'm going to belmont tonight, but will ride Wiss tomorrow and will check it out. I'll brin gmy foldable shovel with me, just in case. Damn, with all the tools I carry, my camelbak weighs more than my bike now days!!!

I hear ya. Sometimes it's nice to go ride without tools. When I do go without tools, I always see something that needs attention and I'm like "dam I wish I had my tools".
I got in a full lap yesterday carrying my shovel and could definetely feel it's presence toward the end of the ride. It's like strength training!

Hey Tom, I found just putting my emergency tools and tube into a saddle bag makes the weight seem easier than in the camelbak. Plus, it's more accessible. Perhaps if you could hook the shovel up to the bike someplace it might make a difference.

Actually, it's other way around. I'd feel extra pound on the bike way before i notice it on my back. The bike is light and nimble easier to control when it's light. The weight on the back is part of my body, and it's always there.
And we are not talking about few ounces of chain tool and folding park tool. We are talking steel machete, saw, shovel, ets... I wouldn't turn my bike from 22 lbs SS machine to 30 lbs slug!!!

It's a good thought. Unfortunetely the shovel is just too big to attach to the bike. My preferred ride (Nomad) already weighs around 32lbs, I think. I've never weighed it. I find it to be more like a gazelle than a slug.....anyway this thread is suppose to be about the trail work.....easy to get sidetracked I guess. My bad.

Having become a new SS rider I suddenly understand the bike weight issues more and wanting to be nimble. I guess my comment comes from being a heavy rider riding a heavy bike which only moves where you point the wheel. So being nimble is not much of an option. Any weight off my back on on the bike gives the illusion of being easier.
Anyway, so as to not get too far off track I started a
