This is not an official PMBA event by any means, but to those who have seen this downhill event in the past, know that it used to be a fun, cool event. Well, blame the manayunk drunks on ruining this for us, but alas, there is hope... See this link

Hey, I'm a Manayunk drunk and I resent this statement.

Seriously though, local radio stations have promoted this and its gotten WAY out of hand.  Back a few years ago it was a lot of fun and everyone in the bike community would show up and have some drinks and enjoy.  Now, Its mostly a mess.  Hopefully the cops wont be too brutal on it this year and hopefully no one does something stupid and gets hurt.

Either way it's going to be a festival or an ass beating. It all depends on how the crowd  acts. The police aren't going to do anything extreme unless they're provoked, especially with all the publicity they've been getting in the news!!! I'm right on the corner of Manayunk and Lyceum, so I'll have a front seat!!! Personally I hope the crowd is going to be cool and not ruin it??

It was a cool event/race for about 10 years where you had to have a method of travel down the hill while wearing a costume and helmets were mandatory. Anything EXCEPT a normal bicycle. There were usually about 20-30 "riders" who went down the hill and whoever got to the bottom first won. Won what? I have no idea, but it was all about having fun. People would "ride" anything from lawn chairs, tricycles, desk tops, lunch trays, a sofa with wheels on it, to a bike with skis mounted instead of wheels, etc... It was so fun to watch, and participate. As you can imagine, watching a guy fly down the Wall out of control on a lawn chair was friggin hilarious! Red Bull and Pabst Blue Ribbon sponsored it in 2003 and 2004, but it was always "unofficial." Unfortunately once it got real popular by word of mouth, hundreds of people started to show up. Then all the drunks from the surrounding parties started to show up and become total idiots. Especially the white trash underage drunks. Then about 3 years ago (2005) cars started to get vandalized because the crowd got so large that it was out of control and there was a mob mentality... So the police started to blockade the street in 2006 and not allow anyone to go down, and last year it was like a police convention and they were out in force. But word spread from 2006 so no one really showed to ride and it was just about 500 drunks with nothing to watch. Soooooo this year the "riders" are going to try to take back the event and simply hold a "ride" down the Wall at midnight on a bicycle in a costume. Show up and try to ride, it should be fun. Then the riders will head to a local tappy and have some drinks and fun...

Go to You Tube and search for "Manayunk Downhill" and you will see some vids...

The posting stated that they're attempting a mass group down hill ride. I saw the orginal post last week on craigslist. I got the impression that it's going to be like a "Critical Mass Ride" they do in Center City every month. Not the usual party ride that has happened the last few years.

I was extremely dissappointed with how the event turned out 2 years ago. It was funny and painful to watch the furniture riders fly down Flemming Street, till they started to crash into the home owners fence and destroyed his front yard  Shocked
