I have several of them, the coolest of which is the Delorme PN-20.  It will interface with the Topo USA program and allow you to design routes, either from scratch or using previous GPS tracks, and then download them into a topo map that's displayed on the unit.  Unfortunately it's pretty pricey - somewhere in the $400 range.  Other units are cheaper but don't have the map-on-display capabilities, but they will let you download the data and create maps on your PC.  Also - the older cheaper units like my Garmin Forerunner 301 will frequently lose the satellites in the woods, which will result in straight lines on the maps as the GPS interpolates from the locations where it gets a fix.  A lot depends on what you want it to do.  If you just want a location (lat and long) in the woods, a cheaper until will work OK.  If you want maps you'll need to spend some bucks.

You can find some Garmin Edge 205 and 305 models on sale. Sometimes. These are bike specific GPS/Cyclometers. The new 605/705's are probably going to phase these out, thus dropping the price.

Cool, I check into a few of these models.. Thanks!

Just so you know, the 205 and 305 have very minimal on board mapping.  You can't load maps into them.  The most they do is just show a track line, with no backing map.  This works ok to find your bearings and get home based on where you have already been, but it's basic.  However, when you do get home you can map to google maps and google earth etc.   They are basically mega cycle computers based on gps and can record a ton of data.

605/705 have color screens and on board mapping, plus all the stuff the 205 and 305 offer.  More $$$.

With both you can do cool bike related data logging and upload to the web.  This is my ride from Friday off of my 305:  http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/5492642   It would have heart rate data too, but I need to get a new battery for the heart rate monitor.  Pretty cool if you're a data or map nerd....

AAHHH.. that's something I was looking for was the ability to load maps into it. So it's worth the extra coin just to get something a little more expensive then. Thanks Chuck!

Also check out SportTracks from ZoneFive Software.  It's free (contribution requested) and lets you download tracks from most GPS units.  From there you can look at charts of speed, elevation and other GPS-based info.  You can also download GPX tracks into other programs like Topo USA.  It tracks the weather, and you can indicate which bike you're using if you want to have it track mileage.  Definitely worth the price.

Wow, that is really cool!  If I ever spring for one of these I'll look for something with that kind of capability...

I actually ran to REI last night to get one. Aparently my reading skillz sux-or! So when I read Karl's post all I got was "Garmin.... 305... $165..."  So when I stormed into REI I made two discoveries.

1. The sale starts on Friday... Yes, Karl, you did say that... Doh!
2. Edge and Forerunner are both "205" and "305", it's the forerunner that will be on sale. Still a kicking price, but...
