PMBA sponsored endurance race??

First of all I want to say at how impressed I was with the outstanding turn out and positive vibe RIV pulled off this past weekend. I knew it was going to be good, but the food and demo bikes on hand made it even better. Took a EWR for a test ride, with the intentions of going a short distance, and was sad to return it back to their stand!!!!
Had PMBA not scheduled RIV for this past weekend I was going to participate in my first endurance race in Leesburg, Va: Leesburg Bakers Dozen. Basically the local club (MORE) and Plum Grove Cyclery got together and organized a local 13 hour race. This is their 2nd year, and from all the chatter it sounds like they had an outstanding time/turn out. A ton of sponsors, food and prizes at the end of the race. The best part about it was anyone could enter the categories (7 of them) and folks could camp for the night. Mt Biking Festival with a race happening in the background.
Just a thought, but would we organize anything like this with our club? It would be great exposure and possibly build upon the positive vibe and name we’re creating. The Wiss may not be the best location for an endurance race, but we have 2 other perfect locations for an event of this type.
Any thoughts or ideas??

i think i am thinking of the same 2 other "perfect" locations and actually i think they'd be far from perfect for a number of reasons.
if anything, doing one at wiss would be easiest i think. we already have established "legit" trails on which to ride.
that said i think it would hard to plan well and it might be too easy for it to get out of control this being a major city and all.
would be cool to do something like an "all night at wiss" or some such race! something where you wouldn't run into to many other users? i would certainly be down for something like that!!!!!!
unfortunately i think it would really take some doing to make fpc think that letting a mountainbike race happen anywhere in philly is a good idea though...
if you have some ideas keep up the chatter!

Cool idea with the night ride. That would solve the problem of the trails being to crowded, although I'm not sure how strict they are on the park curfew. I've heard stories of races happening on park grouds before. I thing there may have been a cross race at Belmont at one time.
We've had succesful events two years in a row now without a hitch so it may not be that far fetched. We have the Rally date locked in with the city. Same time next year.

Basically I was thinking of something that would be about a 12 hour race that would start in the afternoon and roll for 12 hours. You could have teams or individual catagories. The only reason I suggested "other locations" was trying to limit the course to 8-10 miles, with rolling single track. The thought of hammering out 12 hours of laps in the Wiss sounds brutal to the legs, but that could be part of the challenge. It's more of an endurance race and all about laps, but with a fun vibe and atmosphere. Folks could camp, have food and sponsors and set up shop for the night. All in all just a thought to maybe generate some ideas......................

a 12 hour race or something like that would really appeal to riders in the regional area, I would like to see that happen in the Wiss. I have done an adventure race, but never a 12 hour+, I'm sure it would be difficult to have at the wiss., what was your plan to get this event to happen. Where you intending on creating this event or were you suggesting that PMBA get the event off the ground? I am open to any ideas youngave, when did you plan for his event too occur, if you could make it happen the way you think it would what exactly would the event entail.

Had a conversation on Wed with a few individuals who would be considered major players in the local mtbike scene and park operations. The consensus seems to be that a race is around 2 to 3 years off, and it would probably be something like a 50 miler with laps. So it could end up being 'The Wiss 50'. This was only talk so I'm not quoting anyone, funny thing is I was not the person who brought it up so there is interest amongst local racers and promoters.
One thing is that the FPC and the city is goint to want to know "What is holding this event going to do for us" If they are going to see a considerable revenue from the event, they are more likely to approve it. That's all I've got for now.

might not hurt to ask FPC "what would it take?" now, just to see what they say....
you guys in regular contact with anyone over there?
would it maybe be as simple as applying for a permit like the rally?
the thing i have learned in the city is you never know what you'll get... can't hurt to ask.
i think the rally has gone off spectacularly both years now; maybe we can up the levels?
one problem i can see is all of our "volunteers" are gonna want to race

Love the name!
As a throw back to some of the PMBA jersey designs, there was a Walter PP, now there is Philly PP!
Second Max's concern tho, it would be a tall order to convince PMBA members to volunteers to run the race instead of racing.

A couple years back JAR or similar organization was able to run an Adventure race with an MTB lap in the park and DD had said that the FPC agreed to it because it was just one lap of a relatively small group of people and not multiple laps of many riders.
I also can't imagine they paid $1000 for the privilege.

If anything this conversation is a start. It's all about the dialogue and where we take it. I understand that an event like this may be a year or so off, but you have to start somewhere.
My take on an event like this was for PMBA to take the reins and run with it. We could reach out to other local clubs to help with the managing of the event in case a lot off PMBA riders wanted to race. The core to the entire event happening is to have some major sponsors and the blessing of FPC. We could piggy back the week before the Philadelphia International Championship or the week after. Again, just another thought.
Anyone ever been down to Richmond for the Extera Race? They have a huge outdoor festival the entire weekend of the event. Everything that ranges from trail runners to kids events and it culminates with the raec the final day. It's really a great outdoor scene that's promoted and takes place entirely in the city on their outstanding trail system.
