Trees down report?

I may try to clear some trees down this week from the storm. If not, maybe I can get a crew together to hit them at the next trail day!

There are two big trees down on the trails bellow houston meadows.
On is too big nad D3 has been notified.
The other is small enough to be tackled by us. It's between Summit Lane and access trail to Cathedral Ave.
From VGI, Forbidden north, past Wise's Mill, take the first gravel gradual climb on the left, at the top, take the trail north bound, to the right, not the one that goes up to the left to the Summit, but the one that goes down and to the right.
The tree is across that trail at the next hill. Might be better to walk in from Summit, not to attract unnecessary attention at VGI and on Forbidden.
It's too big for my hand saw.

If you get out there and the tree is big enough to be turned into a natural water bar do it. I know some of us are not the best at hopping logs, so after you drop it make a notch in it for non jumping users to pass over it with ease. Don't notch it all the way to the ground, if you do that it will let the water flow and concentrate it (I've seen you do this at some other logs. please stop). According to your description of the location that hill is very eroded and unsustainable so this will be a very positive thing to do. No need to sanitize the trail!

What rolls down stairs
Alone or in pairs:
Rolls over your neighbor's dog?
What's great for a snack
And fits on your back?
It's log, log, log!

Dimitr, I know about that. Actually, as of last night, you could go around it, but causing erosion on the bank. Tom, the tree is not across the ground, but about 2 feet above the trail across it because the trail is so washed out over the years. May just be a removal, not a waterbar. But during the TM day, we can figure out the best thing

....it big, it's heavy, it's wood.
I see what you're saying Neil. It may require some dirt shaping to make it work effectively. Let's try to organize something. Contact me off list, we'll have to go scope it out.

I scoped the log in question. Not big enough for notching and located at a less than ideal site. It fell on a highly eroded section of trail that needs tons of love. I was able to clean (yes I cleaned the whole climb) the log while climbing, on the far right where you can use the bank as a ramp. This would be trail widening on a new trail and would need to be addressed.
It can be cut down to smaller lenghth and buried in the ground by putting two notches in the eroded trail edge, dropping the lob in and filling behind it, slighly slowing the out of control erosion at this site. This would make a challenge for a beginner mountainbiker, but more experienced riders would go over it with ease, and obvilously a horse or hiker could step right over it.
One could argue, why waste time with such a badly eroded section. This is a very chanllenging and fun little section for everyone so why not help it out a little bit. It's all in the details.

That's exactly what I was thinking after reading your earlier post on the subject. I would only add, cutting a nick and deberming the side of the trail uphill from the log to allow water to escape to the side, instead of pooling at the log.
I might take a walk there and do it after the TMD on Saturday.

yea good call. A nice big nick to help get some of that runoff off the trail. This is not a small project, but not really large either. Something like this could be done in couple of hours with two people....who are amped up on Monster.

Nothing wrong with adding the love to that section, Tom and was there on Fri, obviously that section needs a total rerout or that one tree on the big climb is toast, I have an idea how the rerout can be laid ( ha he said laid!) it will take akot of work, but I think that section can be made even more challenging and sustainable at the same time, and still usablfir the four legged trail stompers !
