Good 29er tire ?

hey all!
anyone have any suggestions for a good 29er tire for a rigid singlespeed?
i have 2.1 ignitors on my 26" right now and like them alot. however, i don't know if 2.1 is going to be big enough to smooth out some of the rigid fork. but i do see other 29ers with ignitors and they look alot bigger then my 26" ones. (i run mine at 35 psi)
the other tire that i had in mind was the wtb exiwolf 2.3.
any other suggestions?? thanks!

Right now I'm running the Rampage and it's nice, definitely a good all-around tire espcially for this region. Doesn't roll quite as fast as the Exiwolf but grips a bit better in the slippery stuff, and doesn't feel sluggish. Looks like it will handle snow a bit better as well with the larger, more spaced knobs. You can't go wrong with a set of Rampages.

I started my 29ering (new word) with a set of Kenda Klaws - way too small. Went to Ignitors - was pretty happy with them for a while. But I did have rather frigile looking set of rims and with Ignitors I was always concerned with hitting or bending the rims. Probably, unfounded. But I tell you, they gripped just fine in 29er size and felt pretty comfy on my rigid. Back in July I stepped up to Stan's Flow rims with Rampages all around, and never looked back! Wide rims, big tires, tons of grip, lots of cush.
I know of few who mix and match, like Rampages up front and Ignitors in the back, etc.
You won't go wrong with either tire. They server different purposes.
Ignitor - rolls better, is lighter, slightly less volume
Rampage - more grip, bigger volume, heavier
Do some research, there are many other worthy tires out there. I wanted to try Specialized Resolutions, becuase from the specs they seemed to be smack in the middle between Ignitors and Rampages, but Specialized in it's lack of wisdome discontinued them, just as 29er market exploded!
Just my $0.02
YMMV
Oh, yeah, I ride On One Inbred with rigid CF fork, for the sake of comparison.

EDIT: Chuck brought up a good point about the sidewalls. I've torn holes in Klaws and Ignitors in the year or so I've ran those. (BTW, a radial tire patch from autozone and pep boys works great to closethose hols. Thick reinforcedrubber path is strong enough not to bubble out thri the the hole) So far Rampages have been, knock on wood, been safe from sidewall tears. But then again, I haven't ridden them in places like Poconos or Ringwood yet.

I've put at least 500 miles on Rampages this year And only had one flat due to a micro sliver of metal. I don't have experience with anything else but I’m quite please with them; and they still have some miles left.

Rigid and SS here. Running a Rampage front and Ignitor rear. Worked awesome through the dry summer/fall. The rampage rolls pretty good in the front direction and hooked up great on most everything. It is nice and cushy on the rigid. The Ignitor rolled and hooked great in the back too. FWIW, my Ignitor *felt* equal or heavier than the rampage. The Ignitor is worn now, but seems also to pack up with snow and suck for that. A friend of mine from northern NJ hates the Ignitor because he constantly cuts the sidewalls on rocks. I haven't had that issue around here, but if you ride edgey rocks it might be an issue.
Onward....My brother has been running a Rampage front and Continental Mountain King 2.2 in the back, SS/rigid. The 2.2 is small, more like an even 2.0 but it has a wide tread pattern that seems to keep clean and hook up really well...especially in snow. I have a 2.4 on order to replace my Ignitor. Apparently it measures up to be ~2.2. Looks to roll fast, stay clean, and have some volume. Will have to try it out myself, but it sounds like a great winter tire.
The Rampage is pretty good in the snow, but the wet snow seemed to pack up the side knobs some.

i am running kenda nevegal (pretty much a rampage) up front i was running an ignitor most of the summer but decided it was too fragile in the front.
i like the nevegal traed pattern but i'd be scared to see how it rolls in back.
late this summer i think i discovered something real good! the semislick rear tire, namely the maxxis crossmark. i never could run a tire that small in front but in back i am surprised how well it does! i LOVE how they roll, i really feel like i can feel a difference between these and the ignitor when i am riding smooth stuff.
this winter as the leaves got deeper and the mud came out the crossmark really went downhill fast performancewise. they ruled the dry singletrack this summer but are NOT mud tires. i am back to the ignitor on the back which to me does everything pretty well out back.
there is also another tire i got my eye on.... at least for a nice big front tire. schwalbe is due to (or just has) release a 29x2.4 racing ralph. they look to be both big and reasonably light!

Gotta agree with Max on the Nevegals. They have very weak sidewalls. I can't even use them which is a shame cause they perform really well and roll fast.
I run the Ignitors on my 29 and I'm pretty happy with them....ok I know I never ride my 29er but when I did ride it I liked them.

Tire choice depends on what you want for your riding style. The rampages mentioned are a good sturdy, grippy tire, but very slow rolling. I only need to use it on the front for the harshest conditions - real rocky stuff, for example - it holds the line amazingly. It stinks on the back - it doesn't hook up enough to take the slow penalty.
Ignitors are all-arounders which I didn't particularly care for. They don't do anything really well so they seem pointless to me.
I have a Crossmark now and haven't given it much time, but it doesn't seem to be as fast as I thought it should.
One tire you missed is the WTB WeirWolf. It's got a lot of volume to cush a rigid bike, rolls very fast and has good grip except over very gravely stuff. I ran the tread reversed in the rear and was quite happy. So far, its my favorite.
I hear the Geax Seguaro is a good fast, fairly grippy tire but I haven't tried it. Would also like to try the Schwalbe Racing Ralph 2.4 in the front. Conti Mountain Kings are good for softer conditions.

Rigid SS here.
ive been running the Michelin XC's on the rear. this fall into the muddy transition were in now. i like them in tacky mud but they do slip in sloppy stuff (what does not). in front is where ive been concentrating. I recently mounted a Bontrager AC X on the front and im pretty impressed. It sheds well and the knobs are gripping into the slick corners. before that i had a lighter faster roller jones xc bontys on...not the best tire (weak sidewalls) but i like the tread and performance in dry conditions.
Nevegals are too slow rolling for me. feel slow and are heavy. i rolled them in state college for a few days and that was a good choice.
my summer favorite is smallblock 8 for sure. incredible. makes you feel fast. They are not the best all around but feel really fun... jones xc and smallblock rear is a great combo for the summer wiss. ill try the corssmarks this summer....
Buddies use the exiwolfs and are very happy.
but for now...im looking for the next best thing for the rear tire. Maybe the fire XC pro...i used to run them on my 26er. the weirwolfs too...used to run them...
i usually try the new stuff that pops up in the shop...

Frozen tundra today and I was running way to much tire in the rear. 29er Conti Mountain King 2.4. If you guys are curious, it works great for softer/loose stuff, digs in big time. Slow on hard stuff and the knobs are tall enough to squirm some, this on the back. Great in snowy stuff too, although we haven't had a real snow yet. So, IMO, it's great for when you would need something aggressive on anything softish/loose. It's more like ~2.3 wide.
At some point I'll probably go back to a rear Ignitor for an all arounder, it worked well for me in the loose dry stuff this summer. Still running Rampage front. I have Schwalbe Racing Ralphs on order for good conditions. 2.4f/2.25r. Look fast/light...and have pretty big side knobs. I'll probably use em for the fast days that don't have sidewall eating rocks. It's probably gonna save me a half pound of rotating weight without loosing volume. Hopefully they don't shred to pieces. Will let you know, whenever they come off backorder.
