I went to Fairmount Park for the first time today. I parked at Bells Mill Rd, and rode off from there. Does anyone know where all this sweet areas are? Does anyone have a map of trails? or GPS points to follow?

This is a map off of the Fairmout Park site.  www.fairmountpark.org

http://citymaps.phila.gov/ParksAndRec/cmFairmountParkMap.aspx?ADDRESS=W+BELLS+MILL+RD+%26+RIDGE+AVE&PX=2670533.96196866&PY=278571.647331223

It's not the best but it does show the trails. Hope this helps. Someone else may have somehting better. Or you could show up to one of our rides and get a grand tour.

Yep, we all saw that article.

Come out on Tuesday to stables by Northwestern and Germantown at 5:30, or meet us at around 6 at Valley Green Inn, at the bottom of Wises Mill.

Two ugly tall dudes on SS, one grey one yellow, bikes that is.  Wink

Sounds good. BTW, Max and I had a good ride tonight. Darn boy sometimes forgets that we are riding for fun, and he's not in a race! Wink

Got out to Valley Green Thursday at 6pm 9/27/07 for the first time. I headed northbound on the eastern side of the creek. Very rocky! Going up hill can be tough. I find the ground there to be sandy-ish and loose, so I end up walking up-hill a lot. I am also a newbie, so my fitness and skills aren't at the point to tackle that.

There is a race at Marsh Creek lake off of the turnpike in Chester County in a couple of weeks. I was thinking about going out there to check out the terrain. But I believe I will hit the Wissahickon again early and try to stay a few hours. I am using that PDF map as a guide.

Hopefully my gears don't go crazy on me on up-hills like they did last night. CLICK CLICK CLICK

P.S. I took some shots of my normal spot in Upper Bucks the other week. High Rocks at Ralph Stover on the Tohickon Creek. http://www.zoto.com/site/#USR.ralphstoveroverlook

Hmmm... I have friends who sware that High Rocks and Ralph Stover are more technical than Wiss.
I hope you didn't get discouraged.
Try the Demo#1, which is behind the VG up on the side of the hill.

Wiss can be intimidating to a new rider. Especially if you hit one of the more technical trails. Try the trails on the Roxborough side of the park. They tend to be less rocky. I learned to mountain bike at Wiss and it was tough at first, but once you get used to it you'll love it.

Thanks!! I will check those spots out.

High Rocks and Wiss take about the same amount of time for me to get to from Upper Moreland. High Rocks is a tough area. It is very similar to Wiss how there are a lot of descends and ascends. The main difference is that the Wiss seems to have a lot more rocks, and the dirt is a bit looser. High Rocks seems to be a harder packed dirt. Can't wait to continue to explore all of what Wiss has to offer. Grin

Love em both.

I hit Valley Green on Sat 10/29. Went south on the west side for a minute then west on the trail, and started the long trail north to Bells mill. That was my first run of those trails. Very very nice. Loved it. I crossed over the creek at Bells Mill and headed south on the east side until I ended back at Valley Green's east parking again. That took about four hours. It whooped my butt. No crashes!! Ran out of water shortly after heading south on the east side. And I have a 3 liter CamelBak. I was busting my #@$%! Nice!!

Nice!!! Just had your first epic at Wiss. That was a defining ride my friend. Riding like that will take you to the next level.
