It was kicked around on the MTBR PA forum a few weeks back and I don't want to let it go.  Who's interested in starting up the Jim Thorpe MTB weekend again?  Simpler and smaller.  Held at a private campground down the road from Mauch Chunk Lake park where it always used to be held.  Sept or early Oct.  Fri thru Sun.  Any takers?

I always heard over the years that the great trails are closed. But I'm assuming there are plenty of other trails and that some of the more well known ones are open again.

I just checked the MASS race schedule and there are races every weekend in September right through to OCT 6. Many are weekend races combining Team Relays and Marathons, so just because they are booked doesn't mean there won't be plenty of non team racers and non racers willing to make a trip. The only one I want to do is Sept 23 at Bear Creek, and would mention that Bean's Bikes is calling it the Bear Creek Weekend.   (Also, Seven Springs 24 hour race on the 1st and 2nd).

I reckon it's tough to put on an event like this. But if it is low key it makes it more doable. Plus, if we could also pick two weekends; one as a rain standby, that would be good.

I'd be willing to broach my regular group with it. You add in a contingent from PMBA, from REI, and a couple of others it would be a mini event....

I think it be pretty sweet if could actually do this. I don't wanna miss BC either, it's one of my favorite courses. I'm already committed to the 24 at Seven Springs.

Sept gets hairy quick but let's churn ojut som possibilities - 9/8 --9/9 not great due to bcp's scenic schukyll century (wrenching it)and then bike philly (ever wanted to ride 676? wrenching it).   9/15- 9/16 good.  9/23 not good.  9/29 - 9/30 good possibility.  Any takers?
I'll run this by the dude on the mtbr pa forum.

9/15  9/16 may be good. There's a marathon at Michaux that weekend that some may rather do. I would do a Jim Thorpe over the marathon cause I'm not a big marathon guy, at least not yet.

Well, just don't forget the possible PMBA party which looks like a possible date of 9/15, from people's replies.  I'm gonna bump that post because not many people are responding and we need to see if it's gonna happen or something else goes on.

As I mentioned in another thread the weekend of 9/15 is not doable for me. Sad

I'm "the dude on the mtbr pa forum"  Wink I have a permanent site at the private campground adjacent to Mauch Chunk Park.  I'll speak to the owner but it's going to be difficult if not impossible to put this together
with such short notice. The end of September is still prime camping season and whatever sites are/may be available will likely be scattered rather than together. In addition, we'd have to keep a ceiling on it, set a limit and stick to it. I'll see what the owner says but we may be looking at next year more realistically.

Yeah, I had a feeling this would be the case.  What's to stop us from all "spontaneously" showing up at the Mauch Chunk Lake campground that the festival used to be held at.  The private campground would be easier in terms of booze etc but we can make due.

Yea even if we can't make it official this year, we should just plan a group ride/campout. Good times.

I will be off on weekends starting in October, so I'm in!  In fact, I'll be up there checking out the (easy, or so I've heard) Lehigh River Gorge Trail this Friday afternoon.

Hey guys,

Was up to JT a couple weeks back, and all the good stuff on the north side of Mauch Chunk lake is closed.  As usual, hunters (and equestrians) are more organized than us goofballs on bikes.   >:(Anywhoooo... Blue Mtn Sports can give you the lowdown on what is accessible to ride.  I bought an updated trail guide while up there for $9.  We ended up riding sections of trail that were little less than logging roads.  However I have the book, and would consider loaning it out, or providing intel.  Feel free to email me at kennrymdeko @ yahoo.com
