i know this is last minute, but if anyone's headed down to delaware for the MASS race tomorrow and has room in their vehicle i would greatly, greatly appreciate a lift. i'll throw cash down for a share of gas and tolls or whatever and i can meet you wherever. i just don't want to drive the whole way down there by myself...boring and a huge waste of gas. if not, i'll make the trek alone, but i won't like it.
gimme a call if you have good news: 484.947.8156

Hey Linda, I'm headed down but my plan is to the the Marathon from 9-1 and head home by 2pm. Not sure that works out for you; depends on what you're racing? I live near VG, Roxborough side. 267 934 1676

I normally do sport but have to be back in the late afternoon.
I gotta a space for anyone else who wants to do the marathon... jut 4 hours; a shortie. Some of the sport races have taken me almost 4 hours so this won't be much different!

No worries Lou, I think it's a tradition for the Iron Hill to be ridiculously hot. I did that race 3 years ago, before it was part of MASS series, and it was something around 100... After the race I was wringing out my jersey and it just kept pourin gout of it, there was a puddle on the ground as if someone dumped 16 oz bottle of water!!!
Jess and Linda, have fun, like Lou said, hydrate plenty, it's a fun course!!! Hope you find a ride.
I wish I could go too...

the temp didn't get as hot as they said, but I don't know? I sure felt like the hottest day I've ever ridden. We started off literally in a cloud; my glasses fogged up before i put them on! The mist cleared after a lap or so but it then just got hotter and hotter. The moisture in the air make it a slippery ride, though other than about 10 significant logs and another 10 or so rock patches it wasn't that technical.
I'm exhausted, and the drive home was brutal. I was out for 4 hrs 22 and managed 4 laps. I felt competitive, but I was lapped 2 or 3 times by the top riders! By the time the experts and sport started it was even hotter. I don't think I'll be doing another marathon anytime soon. No mechanicals though, so that was great. But I just couldn't get my body temp down and the 4th lap was more about holding off heat stroke than riding...

yea, avoiding a heat stroke was my main goal of the day. i did the women's sport race and felt great for the first two laps but during the last lap the heat smacked me in the face and i really missed the water bottle that some how flew out of my cage...
besides the lack of water it was a great venue. i didn't fully believe that the place was such a hot spot for gay men like everyone kept on saying until one of the riders went off for a last minute piss at the start line and brought back some gay porn mags he found behind a rock...at least it took the nervous edge off the racers.
as far as the trails go, they were twisty and fun to flow on; they would have been even more fun if they were totally dry. the moisture stuck around on the trail until the afternoon and made for some super slick roots and rocks. i rode with one of the Bean's bikes girls for most of the race (Katy? Kathy? oh god, i'm horrible with names....) and i had a great time. iron hill is a cool place to ride but it's not worth the drive from philly unless you're dying for something different and can carpool.

That had to hurt when you seen your water bottle missing.
That's a long time to be out there in those conditions Jesse. Nice job.

What is it when you ride the same sections four times in a row and you swear you've never seen them before? Heat Stroke? The last lap I kept thinking I made a wrong turn. It made for an interesting course though because it never got old!
Darn, I can't believe I missed the porn

Good reviews of the race guys!
She said "flow", now we know you're a real MTBer! That's good!
Jesse, if i was you, I wouldn't publicly admit missing gay porn!
What else is left on MASS calendar more local this year? I only attempted one race this season, and wouldn't mind getting my behind handed to me before the summer is over.

Bear Creek, Sept 22 - 23. Short track xc on 22 and super tough XC on the 23.
The ascents need a ski lift and the decents... well, I'll be walking both up and down. I can't imagine that a downhill race would have sections scarier than some of the downhills in the XC race. I will stop at the top and put my seat down, and I'll still be walking some of it. But then again, I'm a scardie cat on technical downhills.
