The regular Philly Freeriders ride will leave the VG area at 6 PM. I'm hoping to ride by the Gorgas Lane section to see how the trail work held up after the storm.

It all depends what time I can get outta work. Hopefully, I can make it out. I would also like to see how the trail held up at Gorgas Lane....and some of the other places we have done trail work.

Trail at Gorgas did awesome! However we do need to double the size of the rock french drain on the second one from the top. There is so much water going by there that it started to wear away in front of our work. Put it on the list....

Lou, what do you mean by "in front of our work"? Do you mean the it's washing away at the end of french drain which is on the inside of the trail, meaning closest to the hill side and the Henry bridge?
If so, we might just need to bring up couple of wheel barrels full of medium size boulders to greate and nice pile to break up the flow.
Well pit it on the list to visit on Saturday!!!

I noticed that above it, just below the bridge, where nothing was done, seemed to be a bit shaky. It is OK, but it looks like the soft earth and rocks will disintegrate soon.
Also, I was walking my dogs on the first Demo trail by the 'jumps' and I noticed a small rut starting to form. The path is still pretty wide there and probably it's impossible to drain off all the water. But if we can keep tabs on it we could stop it from getting worse. I forget where exactly; it wasn't like a river was formed, but it was noticeable in an otherwise perfect trail.

Jesse...where do you guys meet at VG? If I can make it out I'd rather not park by the VG Inn, due to the vandalism.

Just wondering if the ride is open to anyone...might be a moot question, but had to ask.

I'm gonna start riding around 5 and plan to be out there for at least 2 hours because I am going through withdrawal! I haven't ridden since SAT! ANyway, I will try to meet up with you guys at VG at 6. Don't wait for me because who knows where I might be at that time... Grady, the rides are always open to everyone. If memory serves correctly, this is an intermediate level ride. Beginners might have a tough time keeping up, unless the group splits into two.

Ahhhh, intermediate level. Okay, if there are any other beginners they can hang with me.
Where is a good SAFE place to park?

Hey - we let Dmitri ride with us last week - at least I THINK he was with us way up at the front of the pack. But most of us aren't at his level, so there will be plenty of slower riders along.
There are NO safe places to park. I generally park at the lot at the bottom of Wises Mill Road, but I know that several breakins have occurred there. Hopefully the aroma of helmets, inline skates, pads and other frequently-sweated-upon items of sports equipment would keep thieves away from my car - or at least make them sorry that they had broken in.

Rico, there are plenty of safe places to park in the neighborhoods on both sides of the park. The scums who break into cars usually hang out at the main lots, especially the lot on Valley Green Rd. up towards Chestnut Hill. Any scums loitering in the wealthy neighborhoods in Chestnut Hill/Mt. Airy would be dispatched quickly. Same goes for Roxborough. If you're coming from the Northeast, best place I can tell you in to park in the lot on Walnut Lane for the Golf Course. Plenty of people in that area. As always, hide all your valuables from sight, BEFORE you get to the lot in case you are being watched.

I think I'm gonna park on Wises Mill Rd. on the street on the other side of Henry Ave and just ride down to VG.
Where do people start out from? I'm leaving the office at 4:30 and should be there a little before 6:00.

yo, doing the same thing as last week but meeting at 5:20 at the Wiggard Rd Entrance, the trail right off the new Demo Trail above Valley Green.
Rico, that is a great place to park as no one goes there. It's the Boy Scout Entrance and you just park on the right overlooking the field. But you are on the other side so it's a bit of a drive to get around there.
Donna, is parking at VG, riding up the rd to the top and riding the demo trail to Wiggard.
5:20 around that loop, or 6pm VG

Damn I just missed the whole group.
But I did meet up with Jamie and Kathleen and Dan and rode with them. THen Dan and I lost those two?
Sheesh!
ANyway, did anyone notice my handywork on the downhill after the Gorgas Lane switchback climb? I built a grade reversal against a large tree on the left line to prevent erosion, and built another one before the log jump to drain the water to the right side also. Oh and I built up the face of the log jump
and you can go pretty far now.
This section is a perfect example of dual lines, one challenging and one easy, to satisfy all user groups... Plus the erosion will cease and the trail will remain for years to come... I did that in 1 hour last night....

Didn't see any of Lou's new work tonight - sorry, I would have taken some pictures. But I did add a couple of shots of the Gorgas Lane workplace tonight to my Picasa site for that project. While it wasn't dry, it also wasn't the mudhole that it would have been before the project. I didn't see any significant damage to the drains. The area that Dave had re-pitched with the SK looks like it's working well - the rain appears to have run off into the stream between the water bars and isn't running down the trail. Also rode thru the stream-crossing project, which also looked great.

I had a good time tonight and thanks for offering to wait up Jon. I guess I need to work on keeping up my pace.
I think the main reason for me being so out of energy was the fact that I realized that I was so busy at work today, I barely ate anything, just my lunch and I had a Clif bar before I left to ride. Lesson learned! Plus I need to get out and ride more than once a week.
I ran into Lou, Jamie, Kathleen and Dan too around Gorgas lane TM area, then headed back to Wises Mill Road and right before the IMBA demo section with the logs and jumps my chain broke. Another rider was nice enough to stop and lend me his multi tool, but it was getting dark and I realized that I should just wait and do it later. So I just walked part of the way back and rode the downhills back to Wises Mill Rd.

Well done Rico.
You know we started with a huge long climb and immediately launched into some world class XC trails that had the works: rocks, stream crossings, horrendous climbs (that's why we love it).
And we also had the Bike Line team join us with some expert riders. They said they were going 'easy' but that was my race pace. Everyone was flying tonight.
Just stick with it and it will soon seem like child's play.
