I am a new rider, as some of you may know by my previous posts.  The only park I ride now is the Wiss. (Mostly Forbidden Drive for endurance and the Demo Trail to get used to technical stuff).  By riding the Wiss. I have seen a lot of the philly riders on the trails and I want to know what is it about the Wiss that attracts you to it?

I love the park because its a close getaway from the stresses of everyday life - like work and school.  Why do you go to the Wiss?  What does the park do for you?

I'm just a new curious rider.

It's just got everything. It's in the city, convenient to get to, and a blast to ride. You got XC for the xc riders, but also some killer downhills and technical for the intrepid, and you got places for jumping for the crazies. You can take multiple tracks, do a lap, do half laps, run figure 8s, and in every trail you got so much happening that it never gets old. Stream crossing, dips, rocks, logs single track, and double tracks. You got Forbidden Drive and the creek in the center at the bottom and you just loop up and down the slopes of of the Valley on each side. Even the longest climb, walking, is less than 10 minutes, but there is no way anyone can say the Wiss is "easy". It's a total workout no matter what you do. Plus, if you get a mechanical, or just want to bail, you can always run back the Forbidden Trail. And you're never more than a mile from civilization. The Wiss just has it all.

There are many great place to ride in this area and the Wiss is not necessarily 'better', but you take it's layout and location and all the above it's hard to beat. Even the guys from IMBA said that short of Vancouver there no other major city in North America that has this kind of resource.

Seriously, it's a little slice of mountain biking heaven.
I love being up on the trails and forgetting that there's a bustling city just outside its borders.
It lets me clear my head and at the same time lets me think things through subconsciously.  I have come up with more solutions to life's issues riding in the Wiss than anywhere else, except the john. Wink

Wow, couldn't have said it better than those two... I moved to the immediate surrounding area and probably won't ever leave. You can't beat riding out of your garage in a densly populated area, which has all the modern conveniences and tons of character, and then plunge into the remoteness and seclusion of the Wiss. All of a sudden, it's just you and the trails and the woods. Well, you do run into people out there but surprisingly not many... Sometimes I don't see another soul...

I've lived in Philly my whole life. I too bought my house as close to the wiss as I could. The wiss always makes me smile, always a positive vibe in a busy city. You can spend hours out there having fun.....in addition to everything that was stated below.
