i don't know how many of you plan to try your hand at a race or two (or winning a whole series for that matter) this year.
i figured we could start this thread to just let everyone know what everyone else is doing.
me, i plan to try to hit all the races out in micheaux this year (but they are far away so we willl see how that goes).
http://www.gettysburgbmx.com/michaux/index.php
i also want to hit some of the funner (and closer to home) MASS races.
http://www.masuperseries.com/
and then for the summer finale, 100 miles of pure offroad fun in the shenendoah valley. this might also be where i die (as good a place as any i guess)....
http://www.mtntouring.com/mountain/htm/home/page_home.htm
along with this i have heard talk of 12 & 24 hour races and all kinds of great ways to suffer through the summer
anyone else got any races planned for the summer? mine starts on 5/6 with the 50 miler @ micheaux followed by the MASS french creek race the next weekend (if i can convince myself to race again by then). would be a hell of a start to the season!

Lets start with bad news. There will be no 12 Hours of Allamuchy this year. That was one fun race to try your hand... er... legs at endurance.
Two years ago I did 80-90% of MASS races, but last year, I just didn't feel like all that hassle. Did just a handful of more fun ones.
My plan for this year was to do more endurance races, and then I got onto thinking about 100-milers... So the original plan was to do 12hrs of Allamuchy in June, then couple of MASS and then Wilderness 101 in Aug and Shenandoah 100 in Sept and cap it with possibly VT50 in Sept and All-a-Muchy in Oct.
Since there will be no 12 hrs in June, I might try testing my legs on Mohoak 100 in OH in June, or just train a lot and do few MASS races.
So the big goal is to start and FINISH the Wild 101 and Shenandoah 100. Where I place isn't as important as just finishing.

I'm definately doing the SM100 this year (already cleared that one with the family!). That's about as much fun as you can have on a bike. Man, I miss Virginia. Not sure about the 101, although I'd like to if I can.
I'd also like to hit some of the Michaux series and maybe a 24-hour race.

That's awesome that there is going to be a DH series.
The last three years, I've been doing many races in the MASS series. Last year I finished third place overall in my age group, but, training to try and beat all the roadies at the XC racing scene is starting to bore me a little. I may try to do a few DH this year, just for the fun of it. I will still do a lot of the MASS races because they are so much fun and so well organized. I also plan on doing the 24 at Seven springs. Awesome course.
Maybe we should have a ride each week concentrating on XC style pain. Last year, my training rides were about one full lap of wiss without stopping (unless I had too for a mechanical or a crash). Sometimes I did more, sometimes less.

I'm thinking about trying my hand at MTB racing this year. I've never done it, but 14 years of motocross racing all the way up to the professional level should atleast give me the competitive spirit. I'd be down to do some road trips with people this summer to some races. Lets keep some posts going around about these events, I'm definitely interested.

First race of the season?
What's your first race of the season? I am thinking Greenbriar on 4/29. Going down the night before and doing the XC marathon length at 8:30.
Anyone doing the MASS team relay?

I am down for a bunch of road trips to races this summer. I am going to do the SM100 and the Adventure 101. I lived in VA for a hot minute, and I love to race down there. I am also thinking of doing some of the MASS series. It is tough to try and race as well work in a bike shop. I will work it out somehow.

for now i think my first race may be french creek....
unless my team really wants to step it up out there for the team relay (in which case they probably want someone faster than me anywhoo
).
it's too frickin far.
i think all my MASS events this year will be the ones within 2 hours of phithy.
i gotta save my longdistance trips for the micheaux races. and for the w101 or the sm100.
and also to anyone who has done the wilderneess101 and the shenendoah 100. i am still trying to decide where i wanbt to die this summer...
any comparisons? is shenendoah really 4 laps? i don't really want to do laps...

From someone who has ridden the shenandoah 2 times, and the wilderness 101 4 times I'll say the sm100 is my favorite. The trails are incredible. Very different from PA stuff. A lot of super fast off-camber trails. Some are super buff, but technical while others are super technical. Both races have crazy climbs but the sm100 has longer ones.
NO LAPS. I swear I don't understand how that sort of idea gets anywhere. These are both single lap, point to point loops. Go to VA to Experience something different and totally incredible. But I'll always love the 101, for it's PA flavor. Both of these races offer good stuff, but like I said PA residents might want to explore new territory.

thanks harlan...
i was looking at the SM100 website but the map but it never indicated if you repeat any of the sections...
i am sure i will see you at one of them (probably shenendoah) i'll be the guy coming into the finish after you've eaten, showered, gotten drunk, and probably sobered up again already... or maybe you'll be asleep already by the time i come through.

was just reading the site. what's the deal with this?
"Each lap of the course will take me approximately 15 min to circumnavigate."
this is obviously not the course from mtn bike weekend.

Speaking of teams.... Who here races with a Philly-area team? Need another [geared] sport racer? I'm not that excited about being non-affiliated this season, so if anyone's got info, it'd be much appreciated. Thanks.
Max, Might be up for that relay, need to check the schedule at home.

In case anyone's planning on racing Greenbrier. I'm planning on racing it, but not doing this pre-ride. Anyone want to ride-share?
this is a letter forwarded from Jim Carlson, the Greenbrier Challenge
Promoter...
MTB Racers,
If you haven't pre-registered for the "Once-in-a-Lifetime Greenbrier"
yet, sign up and come on Saturday and join in on the "Ride the Course
with a Pro" clinic presented by Jeremiah Bishop. Jeremiah will have
a short group discussion on getting ready for the race, with a
question and answer period, then break the group up into smaller
groups to ride the course with either himself or other Pros who will
be working with him. See the website or BikeReg for how to sign up.
Lots of Options at the Greenbrier Challenge on Apr 29, where you can:
- Ride in the AMBC Beginner, Sport, Clydesdale, Single Speed, or
Junior classes without a license
- Vie for over $10,000 in cash and prizes
- Qualify for an Invitation to the U.S. National Championships at Mt.
Snow
- Watch the Top U.S. Racers compete for Olympic Qualification points
- Compete for Maryland State Championship Titles/Medals
- Support the U.S. Olympic Effort
- Ride in the new 4+ hour Marathon event without a license
- Come on Saturday and catch the Rider Clinic with Jeremiah Bishop
- (There are No MASS or WVMBA races on that weekend, so all can
support the race)
The Greenbrier Challenge is BIGGER and BETTER than ever!
It is still an AMBC race for 49 separate categories of Beginner,
Sport, and Expert/Semi- Pro riders. It is 1 of the only 2
Qualification Races east of the Mississippi and north of North
Carolina that will earn invitations for riders to attend the U.S.
National Championships that are on the East Coast for the First Time
Ever this year at Mt. Snow, Vt in July. The top 15 riders in each
5yr age bracket of Beg, Sport, Expert, Semi-Pro will get invitations.
It is still the Maryland State Championships and USAC-MTB licensed
riders from any state are eligible for State Champ Titles/Medals.
It also now includes a World Class UCI Class 2 Race for Elite
Riders . That is to Support the U.S. Olympic Effort, because the
more UCI points that the U.S. top riders earn, gets more Olympic
starting slots for the U.S. at the Olympics in 2008. The same UCI
points are used by countries for qualification to be on that
country's team, plus they help the starting positions for riders in
UCI races in the future. Come see the Top Riders from the U.S.,
Canada, and other countries compete for points!
There will be a new Marathon length race starting early in the day
and lasting 4+ hours for those of you who want to try that discipline.
TEAMS: Sign up for spots for Team Tents/Trailers or cars in the Team
parking area overlooking the start/finish by giving Jim Carlson your
space requirements at jcarlsonida@ yahoo.com

just sigend up fro the SM100 (shenendoah mountain 100).
130 bucks if you do it before june 1st... actually not too bad since it includes 2 meals and 3 nights camping.
i dunno if any of my teammates are going down to this one (or if my GF is gonna want to go with me) so i may have an exrta spot in my car but it is WAY to early to say.
in related "racin" news MASS seems to want 20 dollars extra this year (on top of race fees) to score you with your team... maybe there are some teams with "team budgets" that cover crap like this but mine don't, and i for one am not excited to pay ANOTHER 20 bucks to race this year (it is damn expensive already).
