Sport race had massive rain, lightning, Total slopiness, and one loop cut short. Fun? Maybe in a couple of days as a "fun" war-story!

I finished 17th at Granogue, and although I was just racing for fun, I would have liked to have done a little better. I was riding my Nomad which is not a XC race bike at all. The tires are like 800 grams each! This 35lb comfy couch is the only bike that I've ridden since summer of 07, when I did two laps at Seven Springs on my Racer X.

So when I got home today I wondered what it would be like to ride my lite bike again. I pulled it away from the rack to find two flat tires. 6oz of Stans and a quick shot on the air compressor, check the sag and amazingly the Fox suspension did not lose any air...or maybe I'm just lighter. I dunno.

I drop in on the coil and roll down Chaplin hill, my "boys" get slapped by the seat, which is way up there compared to the Nomad. Okay. No problem, just have to make some riding style adjustments. I cross over to Gorgas and hit my first climb on the feather light bike. Holy shit that was fast. It seemed like no time at all and I was at the bowl. I was rippin, maybe riding the heavy bike all that time made me stronger. It was fun.

I may have to break out the X for Neshaminy. Thanks for reading.

That's awesome.  I wish I had a different mountain bike to switch things up with.  I noticed this morning that I'm down 10 pounds from the last time I stepped on the scale, so I adjusted my Cloud Nine before today's ride... big difference!  I also replaced all my cables, housings and pads yesterday afternoon thanks to the destruction on Saturday.  Altogether it felt like a new bike, but somehow I know it's just not the same experience- thanks for posting!

Lust, You used the s word. No bike would have been good for last Saturday's GCC race. I face planted, broke my glasses, and lost my Garmin.

I like riding my F/S bike, then switching to feather-light hardtail. Know what you mean. No effort up hills. All I need to do os drop 10 more lbs, 10 more years, and 10k on next year's bike.

Kris, don't know how tall you are, but you can borrow one of my svelt hardtails to try out if we ever ride together. 21 and 23lbs each.

ya you went by me like the wind. I didn't even know who it was until you passed. If you could race with that pacemaker Vito you'd be unbeatable.

my unscientific opinion is that in a 14 mile race like Granogue every extra pound carried equates to about 30 seconds extra time per hour.

It's BS I know, but when I do the calculations it means that if I can lose 60lbs I'll podium Grin    (

Cool, thanks for the offer, Neil... I'm 6'3" so I don't know if it'd work out, though.  Maybe next year around this time I'll have gotten yet another bike...

Neshaminy race report:

Had high hopes for the day. Kel is riding her new light XC bike, which almost didn't happen. She rode it three times and on thur the rear shock blows out! After much running around and some wrenching I got the bike rolling again on Saturday just in time to race on Sunday.

This was only Kels second race and she is in beginner class. She looked good off the line and entered the woods in second place. Next time I see her she was in fourth, she told me she got hung up somewhere and lost a couple of spots, but looked strong and I could see she would surely catch the next two girls in front of her as they were off her pace.

My race was staring in an hour, sport class, so I geared up, set up the water station for the sport and expert riders and came back to the finish to see her come in. After three girls finished I knew something went wrong. Mechanical I assumed. Finally I see her come from the corner of the field obviously a dnf, covered in dirt. I mean it's in her mouth down her side, visor on her helmet is broken in half and there are sticks and leaves jammed in the vents. Apon further inspection the helmet is cracked all the way through. It did it's job. To top off this great visual that I'm being greeted with; a nice shiner right on the side of her face under her left eye. Looks she hit the ground face and helmet first and then shoulder.

I took her to the EMT at the race cause her shoulder was hurting. They take a look and I am fearing the worst. They suggest Xrays. So I bail on my race get out of my gear and it's off to the emergency room (yea I admit I was pretty bummed cause I love this course but I gotta take care of my girl). Suprisingly she is in good spirits, which promted the triage nurse to request a pee test. I think she thought we were on drugs, which we kinda were, but it was all just adrenaline induced. I mean breaking your first helmet is like, a right of passage. Luckily the shoulder is not serious, just a bad contusion and should be fine in a few days.

Sorry this is more of an injury report. The course at Neshaminy is one of the best in the series and I'm lookin forward to next year where we can try again. Anyone out ther actually get to ride it? Thanks for reading.

Dang that is a lousy story!  Glad she's OK though!  Splitting a helmet is never fun but it always makes for a good story if it's not serious.

I got out in Sport S1 and was pretty happy with my day after finishing stronger than I started off.  I had never ridden the course before and I thought it was a lot of fun- I'd love to go back and enjoy it without worrying about pace.  I thought it had a good flow and all the little log overs and ramps were a lot of fun.  I underestimated my water consumption and had a couple minor wrecks but all in all had a great time.  Glad the weather complied this time!!

Glad to hear it wasn't more serious Tom, I heard about that crash today from a friend who was on the course too. As far as the busted helmet goes, after I split mine a few weeks ago I hung it on my office wall as a trophy.

LOL That's funny.

Last night I was checking out the specs on the Blur for myself. Maybe a replacement for the Racer X.

Is it wierd that I'm turned on by the fact that my girl banged herself up racing a mtb?

Glad to hear that she's ok.  I was walking by you guys on my way to watch the start of the Sport class.  I thought "damn, that looks like it hurts."  I have a huge bruise on my left shoulder thanks to a tree that stepped into my path.  First time riding at Neshaminy.  Tough course.  I finished 2nd in Beg. Vet 2.

I was at Neshaminy on Sunday, raced in Sport Senior 2 (aka S2), finished in 11th place, which isn't bad for not having ever been there before.  It was a rough course, my back hurt a lot by the end.  Harlan won the Elite open, followed by Aaron Synder only ~15 sec behind.  Lath finished in 11th in the Elite class, but what it doesn't tell you is he was riding a single speed.  With a broken front suspension and an ineffective front brake.   Shocked

Here's the handy dandy race results http://www.prologsoftware.com/proracingtiming/results/r06_22_08Final.htm

If it wasn't for the bruised ribs, sore shoulder and tweaked ankle from an early endo I'd consider the race a success. I was only 15 minutes behind the nearest in my class as opposed to last year where I was 1hr behind Grin. If i can lop off another 45 minutes next year I'll be in the hunt!

and shock of shock, those Harris boys don't just jump! Steve kicked some major butt in Sport XC in his first race in a couple years...

Steve was there? Dam I missed him. Ok I'm really bummed that I did not get to ride the course. I'm planning to go back up and ride it with someone who knows it without the tape.

At the party on Saturday I got to be a fly on the wall as I  was surrounded by about five girls, (hazy memory ) and they were talking about there experience in the park on mt. Bikes, discussing OTBs, huckin rocks,  like we would talk after a ride, some sounded pissed that they didn't quite get a climb in the park just right, ithought to myself, " wow this is how I sounded 8 years ago when I first rode certain sections! ...or maybe I sounded like that just last week?"

You have got to be proud of Kel, she is one hell of a rider already, shiner and all! Glad to hear she is ok!

Glad to hear that Kelly is OK and the injury wasn't serious.

Sucks you didn't get to race Tom, but you had to be chivalrous and take care of the injured lady.

Yo Tom - Sorry I missed you at Neshaminy dude.. I got there at like 10AM and heard what happened to Kelly. Bummer, but glad there was no broken bones...(we've had enough for this month..)   You are a good man for takin care of her...and too bad you missed the race.   I can meet you there one of these days for a ride as I think I can re-trace the course pretty much... you would love it - it was such an fun course to ride.  In my opinion it was all about riding smart and not crashing in the technical sections as there were a lot of 'em.  I saw Jesse and Neil on the staring line too....

Really well done by Guys Bikes and hats off to them for putting on such a great event.    I've been riding a decent amount and felt pretty good and wanted to see if I could still hang after not racing in 2 years..  I ended up getting 6th in Sport Vet 2.  I'm happy w/that and now I have the bug to race again.. Maybe Fair Hill???  Anyone else thinking of going?   (we really should start a PMBA team next year as it would force me to do more racing/group rides.. which are the most fun..)

Hmm, not sure...  The fact that you were wrenching her bike prior to race day probably means nothing, I'm sure you torque'd everything to spec.  Now if she continues getting bang-up and you're all fired up about it then my vote changes to 'weird'.

Thanks everyone for their concern.  I am feeling much better today & will probably be able to ride by the end of the week.

The worst part of everything is up until the part that I fell at I was feeling good & riding well.  I was the fourth girl in but the third girl was having problems w/ the techy stuff but everytime I accelatered she went a little faster... oh well I thought there were lots of logs ramps on the course and I didn't want to push myself to hard at the beginning.  So I let her keep the pace for a bit & I settle into an easy pace that I was able to get over most logs and up & down all hillls easy. I got hung up on a bridge by a few seconds no biggie I was right on the girl in front of me & she was already showing signs of hurt.  I just started passing some of the slower olders guys and was going up & over one of the many log ramps when my bike tire got stuck between the log & the ramp & I flew up and over my bike and landed face first.  First thought was oh no did I break a tooth; second thought was gotta keep moving... so I gargled w/ water from my camel back (swallowed about a pound of dirt) and then started riding again (not before seeing the visor broken on the side of the trail).  Although the adrenadeline was enough to keep me pedaling the pain in my shoulder started hurting more & more pretty soon it got to the point where I couldn't safely ride over the small roots... at that point I realized that I was going to have to DNF (wasn't happy) & that there was a possiblility that i really hurt myself.  After about 10 minutes of my limping pace (ride limp not walk limp) everyone who I passed started passing me.  That was another blow.  About 10 minutes before I got to the a bailing spot I ran into a girl that I knew; I then asked her the important question are my teeth in tact?  She told me yes but that I most likely was going to have a black eye I was estatic & starting riding at a slightly quicker pace (it was a great course) although I was crying in pain a little bit at every root & rock.  I finally got to the bail out side & found Tom; we went to the EMT's who gave us the bad news that my shoulder needed Xrays...

Went to the hospital as Tom said in good spirits which prompted the Triage nurse to request a urine sample... when I left it was still sitting in my hospital room by that time I was already given my subscription & a motrin 1200.  Slept most of yesterday & am feeling a lot better today by tomorrow I think that I will be feeling even better... still haven't taken any pain pills.

Um eventually I am going to finish a race w/o crashing in it and hopefully make podium... now the question is wiill that also be a turn on for Tom... LOL Smiley

Thanks for reading

Damn - that's ONE TOUGH GIRL!!!   A lot of women I know can't even comprehend the thought of riding a MTB in the woods let alone taking a header in a race and keeping riding...!!          Tom - you better hold on to her dude.... they don't make many like  that...

Very nice.  My girl likes to ride, but I'm not sure she'll ever get excited about a fall like that.
