the susquehana scorcher in havre de grace is a fun one. it has a good mix of climbing and fun descents. the race for chocolate in hershey is another good beginner race, that was my first race ever and was a blast!
but, if you like brutal climbing, rocks, and technical trails then french creek, bear creek, danville tour de tykes, the cat classic, or any michaux race would be well suited!

Oh yea! Danville Tour De Tykes is a tough one. It seems that it goes uphill the whole time. Must be smoke and mirrors.
The past two years I went there and spent the night in Danville so I could do the XC on sat and the super D on Sunday. The super D is a lotta fun. Best part is eating at BJ's BBQ on Saturday night. Awesome food. You'll be full and still keep eating.

i would say that the closest race to philly would be the D&Q summer sizzler, behind gloucester county college just over the bridge into NJ.

That is definitely a great "starter" race. Vey fun quick relatively easy course. Neshaminy is also very close, only couple of miles north of TP exit on US-1, but Neshaminy is more difficult.

Hoping that I may actually be able to race at French Creek even though I've hardly been riding, I decided to go do 1 lap of Wiss. I didn't make it. Moving at a nice clip with no stops, I got a little more than half way when I hit the wall . Have not been on a ride like this since last year. It felt pretty damn good. Looking forward to doing it again.

Anyone racing at Marysville this weekend? Even better is anyone camping out? It'a great couse if you have not done it yet. Very fun and fast. I thinking of going tomorrow morning even though I am on nightwork and will be sleep deprived. I raced Neshaminy on 3 hours of sleep after hanging out the night before, so might as well stay consistent.
I'll think of it as training for the 24 at Seven Springs.

really want to go and planned to camp, or at least sleep in the Van, but I've got no one to watch the dogs. So now I'm debating whether I even want to do the race; it'll be a $100 day just to do that. But it looks like it will be a great weekend of events.
I know Donna is camping out.

Did my first solo ride in awhile yesterday, no distractions just focus on going fast and steady without blowing up or stopping. So I guess it was my first training ride of the year! It felt good.

... If your gonna be a bear, be a grizzly!..
Bring some flyers, stickers and shove down the other riders throats as you smoke past them on the trails to victory.

My goal is to do most of the MASS XC races. First time racing in about 10 years. Wasn't ready for 1st Fair Hill race and skipped French Creek due to weather. Granogue tomorrow. Gloucester County College next weekend. Plan to do Neshaminy, Fair Hill, Iron Hill and Bear Creek. Still thinking about Marysville since its July 4th weekend. Had a crazy thought of doing the 101, but that's another story.

Kris Racing is awesome, you should def give it a try. Look at the distances compared to what you usually ride and go from there. If you think you can do sport distance then go for it, but don't expect to kick ass your first time out there. A lot of these guys are pretty fast.
You will never ride as hard on a casual ride as you do on race day. You will dig deep and that's part of the allure. I started out racing sport and got killed but it was fun. You may be better off trying beginner just to see how you do. If I had started out as a beginner I may have won a bunch of races, but, at least with sport you get more miles for your buck.
Most importantly; have fun.

I'd offer this advice, for the first couple of races, try to race yourself only, ride your own pace and race, don't get sucked into the pace held by more experienced racers and blow up half way thru. Better finish, than DNF....
Just pace yourself. In the race the adrenaline level and effort are different from what you're used to. Like Tom said, the mileage is comparable to what you do, so there is no reason not to finish strong, but so many beginners blow up and DNF...

Here's my 2 cents.
I did Granogue this weekend and had a blast. First race in years. Beginner Vet II. Placed 5th out of 16 starters. Pre-race jitters brought back the feeling I used to get when racing BMX back in the 80's. Was definitely pumpin some adrenaline at the start.
You should try Cool, thanks Tom. That's the kind of advice I was looking for. I definitely don't mind getting my butt kicked. I put in about 10 mi 5 times or so a week in the Wiss so I was thinking sport. Hopefully I can get my rear in gear for the race this weekend...
With the mileage and location that you ride, this weekends race at GCCC should be no problem for you. GCCC is tight and fast with lots of roots and short steep hills.

Kris,
You can go GCC no problem. This will be my 4th MASS race Vet2 Sport (finishing mid-low pack usually) this year. GCC is like the Demo 1 but twisty and with roots, and small sharp climbs. If you can climb Wissy, you can lay the smack-down at GCC. I raced a few beginner races in the past few years, and amped up my training to get into sport - 95% of it from riding Wissy.
GCC will be tight. Lots of riders on a short loop. GCC if wet, will be a little slick on off camber roots. GCC will be fast.
But: Have fun most of all! You are paying $$ for it. Don't let it become too serious. Go fast the first lap, see how you feel, then pace for the next one or two.
Go for Sport. PACE yourself and hydrate

GPS units are not like "On-Star", where they can transmit both ways. If I get another one, maybe I will put a chip in it for lost pets to track it down!!
That first lap with the lightning hitting around us was scary, and the second lap was a cluster-F__K! I wore out my rear pads on the second loop also!
Nice putting a name to a face, Kris!

man I'm still peeved about losing my $25 computer on a downhill at Michaux. Mainly though I wanted to find out the max speed I hit!
I'm both sad and happy to have missed the race. It sounds epic!
Disc brake pads normally last a season, but all it takes is about 1/2 hour of rain and mud to destroy them. French Creek, 2 years ago everyone lost their brakes.
I wonder if the 'organic' ones are any different?
