Hey Everyone,

IMBA has just released a new book called Managing Mountain Biking: IMBA's Guide to Providing Great Riding.
Here is what they say about it:

What makes one trail a success, while another is unpopular or the source of conflict? Why do some trails last for decades with minimal maintenance, while others require expensive repairs? Managing Mountain Biking gives solutions for these and dozens of other trail-related dilemmas. Written for professional land managers, volunteers, and recreation providers alike, this 256-page book offers an essential collection of best practices for planning, designing, and managing successful trail networks and bike parks.

Since we'll be dealing with all of these issues in the future, I thought everyone would enjoy checking it out. Here's a link to their site with a preview of the book:
http://imba.com/resources/bike_management/managing_mountain_bikes.html

Included is a list of 26 success stories from around the world, examples of effective trail management.
The Wissahickon Valley is one of the 26!  I can't wait to check it out.  Anyone ordered it yet?

There is a discount if you place a bulk order.  I'm sure it would come in quite handy.

Cheers!
ChrisB

I've borrowed and read the Trails Solutions ( http://imba.com/resources/trail_building/trail_solutions.html) and highly recommend it to anyone who rides dirt, makes you look completely differently at every trail you're on. And respect it and ride it accordingly, like being a lot more aware of locking up the wheels and sliding, etc...

IMBA and the US Forest Service also released a free DVD "Building Mountain Bike Trails" as a supplement to the "Trail Solutions" book last fall. Free copies can be ordered from http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/rectrails/trailpub.htm

Thanks for the lead. I ordered one and got it two days ago. Unfortunately, the DVD was defective and didn't play. Just re-ordered another copy.

It arrived last week while I was away.  I've only browsed it briefly, but it looks great.  It covers everything that you'd want to know - building teams, building trails, safety, mountain bike patrols, lawsuits (defending, not filing!) - all sorts of great stuff.  There's even a section on the Wissahickon and IMBA's trail-build project there.  I'll bring it tomorrow night if anyone wants to peruse it.
