Title: Night ride tonight????
Post by: mtrostle on September 08, 2008, 12:36:52 PM
Anyone up for a night ride tonight?? The wife is out of town this week so I have free reign of my schedule. Probably going to start at the bowl around 8:30 and ride out past Demo 1, till Summit Ave. May ride the other side depending on how I feel. More than enough, safe bail out points along the way. Decent pace with appropriate rest stops. Still getting use to my lights, so looking to just have fun than a hammer fest.

sorry man, personally I have a hard time waiting until night time when it is soooooooo friggin nice outside. My ride this evening (6-7:30) in the park was incredible. The dirt was perfect, and when the sun was going down the colors were amazing.... Hey but I will be doing night rides soon enough...

Yea I was working on trails till like 730 then came home and saw your post. No way I was getting ready to go at that point. Hope you had a good ride. Night riding when it's not cold is actually pretty sweet.

Hey, were you guys the ones working at the Bowl last night?  Saw some peeps up there, but didn't really have time to chat. Looked like some digging was going on.

what kind of lights are you guys rocking for these parts?  I've been eying the new Dinottes out there

I just got a set of NiteRider Trinewt Duals from REI. Pretty good light. Very bright and easy to mount and adjust. And it's super light weight.

Only downer I would give it: It has a high and low setting and when on the high setting you will only get about 2 hrs out of it.

I raced a 24 with them so I gave them a decent first workout. I ran them in high at first till I saw how quickly the battery depleted. On the next lap I kept them on the low setting and it was plenty bright enough.

I should mention these were on my bars and I was running a Light and Motion Li-Ion HID on my helmet. So I did not need high setting on either light with the two combined. If I were only running one light I may have needed the High setting on the fast downs and switched to low on the climbs to conserve power.

I picked up a set of new Princeton Tec Lights from Ebay for an amazing price this past spring. It's the Switchback 3 model and was quite surprise by the amount of light on the trail. It has 3 LED's  and 4 settings (high, medium, low & strobe) with a loooooooooong battery life. On the high setting it has 6 hours of life! I have them mounted on my helmet and just throw the battery pack in my camel bak. For the price and all the accessories that came with it, I couldn't pass them up. I could use another smaller light on the handel bars to throw light on the trail right in front of me, but for now my head is in constant motion scanning up the trail and in front of me.

Hey tom, are you riding your Nomad for the 24's or are you utilizing other weaponry?  Those HIDs look cool, but it sounds like LED's have taken over recently.

trostle, i've heard good things about the princeton tec lights. i've been checking out lights on mtbr off and on, and people seem to speak highly of the Dinottes. I don't personally know anyone who has one, but they look pretty nice.  i wish I had money to throw around for a nice setup :) I'll prbly settle for a nice headlight at some point.

Nope. I raced the 24 on my Nomad.

I also raced in a 4 hour endurance race on my Nomad; various XC races throughout the year; and this past weekend I took it downhilling at Diablo. I ride it everywhere. 36.8lbs on my digital scale. This sunday I'll be in the lead group at Bike Philly on my Nomad.

I am going to build a Heckler very soon. I'm shooting for somewhere between 27-30lbs so I can go faster on the climbs and not lose too much on the downs. I probably will not go DHing on the Heckler though.

Nice. Those Nomads are versatile!

If you're looking for a lighter setup, you should check out my Knolly some time. I got it built up a little heavier, but I could've put an air Pike on the front and prbly kept it under 30... maybe.  I opted for the Lyrik in full disregard for the weight weenie in me :)

I think Turners have a good thing going too for all around trail bikes. The new 5 spots are sweet, and the RFX's look awesome. However, that would prbly blend a bit with your Nomad.

You guys riding this weekend?
