This is the bridge at Henry and Gorgas. I'm sure it will stand for a 1000 years. But when I see exposed rebar it just doesn't look good. It's an optical illusion I'm sure too, but the this span actually looks like it's bowing.

Seeing as there has been so much water damage in the area, with the hill slides and everything, and seeing how the water has started to crumble the concrete, I gotta figure the potential for a serious problem exists.

Can we have our engineers get on this... Thanks

With the expansion joint being above the column I would not be surprised if you do see a bit of sag. You can see from the calcium and salt deposits that the water is wicking into the concrete and causing it to become more brittle. Water and salt do wonders for rebar and concrete :o Come this winter we'll see more fratures and cracks in the facade of the columns...........

I've been eye balling that section for the past year. I'm surprised that it wasn't reported by the water department crew that was in their earlier this year rerouting all the drains under the access road.

According to Gov Ed Rendell's bridge fix program, this one is slated for early next spring in which the entire area below will be excavated and re-worked with funds available for a new free-ride park...

My dad is a retired City of Phila Bridge Engineer Manager. Any bridge built from early '50s to late 80's he had a part in. I will show him the pic. But, it may be a state highway, as many streets are in the city.

I did see them clearing some trees underneath there last week, so maybe they are preparing it for work (?)

I saw this a few years ago and kinda shook my head.  But then I figured if they let people cross the south st bridge downtown, then why not...it's got a few more years in it.   :D

If you don't know what I am talking about, look closer next time you are west of 27th on South St.  If you are really brave walk the sidewalks, where there are large holes in which you can see the water below.  And also, large pieces tend to fall on 76 at times.
