Title: Fair Hill Race Volunteers Sunday June 13
Post by: Lou on July 09, 2008, 11:24:54 AM
Jim from Delaware Trail Spinners asked me to post this:

If you are not racing on Sunday we could use a hand at the Fair Hill Classic.

We need volunteers for registration, course marshals, road crossings, water stops, and sweeps.

On Sunday we’ll need a small group before 7 AM to work the beginner and novice registration.  We anticipate 200-300 novice and beginner riders registering by 8:30 AM.  The big rush will occur between 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM when sport and expert register.  We anticipate 400-500 sport and expert riders registering during this time period.  With enough volunteers we might be able to do this in shifts.

Course Marshals will arrow and ribbon their section on Saturday.  This will help you learn the section and it’s relation to the course.  Sunday you’ll be on course helping riders at junction points, checking the course, and reporting possible injuries.  This is a fun way to watch the race.  Times vary depending on the section.  Beginner and Novice sections need to be covered from 7:30 AM until 11:30 AM.  Sport and Expert sections need to be covered from 10:00 AM until probably 2 PM.  Sweeps will come by and let you know your section is complete.

Road Crossings will stop vehicle traffic during the race to insure rider safety.  The road crossings are early in the race.  They will need to be covered from 7:30 AM until 12:00 PM.  Sweeps will come by and let you know your road crossing is complete.

Water Stops will give out water to the racers.  Water Stop 1 will need to be covered from 7:30 AM until 12:00 PM (Top of Black Bridge Road near North Appleton Lot).  Water Stop 2 will need to be covered from 7:30 AM until 1:30 PM (273 Bridge near Gallaher).  Water Stop 3 will need to be covered from 11:30 until 2:30 (Scott’s Mill Bridge Area).  Water Stops 4 (Five Bridges exit into Crack Head Bob) and 5 (Hump Back Bridge that crossing Gallaher) will be unmanned but, needs to be supplied by 11:30 AM.  Sweeps will come by and let you know your stop is complete.

Sweeps will follow the last rider of that category.  Some sweeps will start at the beginning and others will be imbedded with the course marshals.  Novice sweep will probably leave the starting area around 8:30 AM and cover the entire Novice course by 10:30 AM.  Beginner sweep will probably leave the starting area around 9:15 AM and cover the entire Beginner course by 12:00 PM.  Expert and Sport will probably be best served as a relay.  We could use stronger riders to cover the expert and sport sections since they’ll be riding faster.

Many sections of the course can be driven to.  So, it is possible to get music, food, and chairs down to these sections.

This is a preliminary description of what each job will require and an approximate time commitment.  This is subject to change slightly after tonight’s meeting.

Thanks
