Title: Go EAGLES!!!
Post by: OTBKing on June 04, 2008, 08:28:37 AM
Riding in Betzwood Park (across the river from Valley Forge) I saw a adult Bald Eagle snacking on some fish on the side of the Schuylkill, I stopped like 20 feet from him, he looked at me and took off.  His wing span must have been 8' across. :o

That's awesome. I've never seen one in the wild. Only at the zoo and even then it was impressive.

THat is so awesome! I saw like 50 of them all together once in British Columbia Canada years ago on my way home from Whistler. They are beautiful. I also saw one in the Poconos last year. They are much more prevelant than before which is awesome. Can't wait to see one in the Wiss!!!! Check out this site:

I think there is a nesting pair in betzwood.  i've seen them a couple of times. actually i saw the pair once and one of them another time.  the first time was in late spring of '07. i was riding on the park side of the river on the singletrack that parallels the railroad and i must have startled them because they took off out of a tree and flew across the river. i almost fell off my bike. it was a beautiful sight... and they are huge birds! then again i saw one of them in the woods across the river.  you have a better chance of seeing them if you are riding alone since there's less noise than a group ride.  i haven't seen them in a while but was wondering if they were still around.  pretty cool.

I saw one outside of captivity some years ago. It was sitting on a roof in Bridgeport of all places. I thought it was a statue at first until it turned its head & I freaked since I was only like 50ft from it! I called the Elmwood Park zoo to find out if they had lost one & that turned out negative. Really cool to see something like that up close.

When my Dad still had her single engine plane down in Florida, one Thanksgiving Holiday we went down and he and i took a few flights around the area. As we were about 1800' I saw a soaring baldy come 50 feet from us. It was so quick but I can still see him/her in my mind. Awesome birds. I also saw many from the boat up the inland water passage from Vancouver to Juneau.

I talked to a Fish yesterday and he mentioned he just got back from the Forge with his son and was raving about how nice the trails were so I decidided to do a solo ride there. As im riding, im thinking about this thread and how much I would love to see this eagle. Just like that I look down as im flying down the trail I see an unusually awesome feather on the trail. I blow past it then turn around and grab the feather. I thought it could be an eagles feather. I finish my ride flying like an eagle and go home and look on the inernet and for sure, its an eagles feather. I didnt see the eagle but he sure let me know he was there. The feather is over a foot long and very impressive. Also, apparently possessing an eagles feather is illegal for a non native american with a fine up to $25,000. My brother in law is an FBI agent and we're riding the Forge today and im going to dare him to arrest me for this alleged offense.
