Post by: Mitk125 on May 18, 2008, 12:38:48 PM
Broke my knee cap on thrusday and had surgery on friday to screw it back together. Anyone else had this happen? Did it effect your riding after you healed up? How long did it take to heal?

Just let me know that someone else as done this and it didnt kill their riding.

Thanks guys

Sorry to hear about that. I can't imagine how painful it must be.

I have no experience of such things, but this guy has had 2 knee replacements and is still going strong...

Hope this helps.

i didn't do what you did, but i did dislocate my right knee in november. it took about 2 months to get back on the bike, but now(6 months out from injury) my leg is stronger than ever! biking is awesome for your knees, it keeps the muscles strong, which keeps the stress off of the joint. i hope you have a speedy recovery!

My Sister has had 4 knee surgery operations, she is going to be 40 in Aug. and she is rank at one of the top 25 indoor field hockey players in the country.

Coming back from an injury takes time, but you can come back strong.

Amen Kman! That is so true... If you want it badly enough, you can rehabilitate yourself back and actually be stronger than your were before... I partially tore my ACL in my right knee riding motocross. It hurt bad (couldn't walk) and I went to 2 Ortho Surgeons (Rothman Institute and my brothers Father in Law Dr. Okin) and they both suggested I get an ACL replacement. However after some long internet investigations, and after it started to feel better, I decided to do rehab exercises to strengthen all the muscles around the ACL to negate the effects of the tear. After about 3 months it was feeling great and I was back on the mountain bike. And for the last 6 years my knee feels awesome and I rarely have an "incident" where it moves side to side. By doing the exercises to build those muscles, and riding my bike at least 5 days a week, I have been successful at keeping my knee in top shape and did not have to get surgery.

But my point is that you really need to listen to your rehab people and stick to the program and you will be back up to speed in no time.

BTW, my buddy Joe shattered his knee and lower leg riding motocross and he had it totally rebuilt by Dr. Okin and he is riding strong as ever. He was down for almost a year but he came back strong. Good luck and stay positive!

That was six years ago! I remember it like it was yesterday, that was a gutsy decision Lou, I remember you wearing a brace for a bit, but he listened to his body and healed up.  Remember that doctors give great advice, but you k ow your body the best and you have to live in it, the doctors go home when they are done work. Take your time to heal, and you will be riding before you know it !! Positive mind gets positive results.

Hope everything goes well!

Very inspirational!

3 yrs ago a crash put me in the intensive care unit. Two weeks in the hospital, two weeks of rehab at home, I was riding slowly on Forbidden drive a month after the crash, and back up to speed a few months later.

You'll be back.

Same here - tore my left ACL off a stupid wall ride last July, decided not to get any work done and still made #1 in the (40+) age DH Gravity East Series by the end of the year! I made routine rehab visits, stayed on the bike, quit running as a cross excersize and bang better than ever! I don't even wear a brace, though probably should doing the DH stuff...

Ride on

Thanks for all the positive input guys. I actually broke it rolling out a 50 foot endo. if it was on film i think it would be worth it. I have a month left in the cast then i start therapy. I plan to make it as strong as possible , I actually feel lucky that it's just the bone not any tendons.

I'll keep  this updated on my recovery. Knock on wood i may get to ride by the end of the summer
