Title: Funding for Fairmount Park Post by: Lust4singletrack on May 01, 2008, 12:47:05 PM For everyone who enjoys the Wiss, Belmont Plateau, West River Dr., Kelly Dr, etc etc:
Hi, As Philadelphians, we all know that one our greatest resources is Fairmount Park. We use the park for walking, biking, hiking, and a slew of other activities. Sadly, funding of Philadelphia's parks has flat-lined over the last thirty years, leading to blight, insufficient maintenance and all around deterioration. Now we have a chance to turn that around. Mayor Nutter has proposed increasing funding for parks and tree planting by $2.5 million. We need Philadelphia City Council to sign off on this important initiative for Fairmount Park. Our goal is to make sure the City Council hears from more than 1,000 Philadelphians who want to see Fairmount Park thrive. Send your message to the City Council today: http://pennenvironment.org/action/preservation/support-fairmount-park?id4=ES (http://pennenvironment.org/action/preservation/support-fairmount-park?id4=ES) Then, forward this to your friends, family members and coworkers in Philadelphia and ask them to send a message to the City Council as well. Together, we can protect Fairmount Park. Sincerely, David Masur PennEnvironment Director DavidM@pennenvironment.org http://www.pennenvironment.org P.S. After adjusting for inflation, Fairmount Park's budget has been cut by more than half over the last twenty years, and staffing levels have plummeted. So help us protect one of the city's greatest natural resources by sending a message to the City Council today. Title: Re: Funding for Fairmount Park Post by: fishnchips on May 01, 2008, 01:21:49 PM sounds good, but when I was at the FOW steward's meeting I'm pretty sure a guest from the FPC was happily to report that Mayor Nutter and the city council had already approved a 1.6million increase this year. It's just a drop in the bucket really, and 2.5mil will be a lot better (though still far short). But the 1.6 was the first significant increase in decades.
Don't quote me on this, it could just be his proposal that has happened so far and perhaps the city has not yet approved it. Title: Re: Funding for Fairmount Park Post by: Rico on May 01, 2008, 02:07:31 PM Tom,
I filled it out. I also contributed by getting my trails permit. ;D Title: Re: Funding for Fairmount Park Post by: halfLoop on November 07, 2008, 11:47:21 AM I was reading about the city budget woes at...http://www.philly.com/philly/news/homepage/20081107_Nutter_makes_deep_cuts_in_Phila__services__payroll.html
Nutter is taking 10% paycut Excerpt : Nutter's own initiatives were not spared from the chopping block. For instance, he had promised a $4 million boost in funding for Community College of Philadelphia. That figure has been cut in half. About $10 million in parking-tax revenues was to be set aside for street paving. It will now be redirected. Fairmount Park won't get its promised $3.1 million boost until possibly 2011.
