Title: FOW Feb. Work Day
Post by: ChrisB on January 30, 2007, 04:35:08 PM
Friends of the Wissahickon was recently named volunteers of the month by Fairmount Park, thanks in large part to the recent help of PMBA volunteers.
Here is a link to the article on the FPC website:
http://www.fairmountpark.org/VolunteerRecognition.asp

The next Friends of the Wissahickon work day will be Feb. 10 at 9:30.
Unfortunately, Mariana and I will be playing in the snow in Vermont that weekend, so we won’t be there. If anyone would like to lead a ride afterwards feel free. If you are interested in helping out, here is all the information you need.

Chris Bergerson

----------------------

All,

The Feb FOW work day will again take place in Houston Meadow where we will remove and chip more invasive trees and shrubs in order to protect the special ecological integrity of the meadow.

Please circulate broadly:

Saturday Feb 10th
9:30-1:00
Take Henry or Ridge Avenue to Cathedral Road
Turn East towards Wissahickon Park. Travel several long blocks.
Park near Courtesy Stables. Look for signs. (No big banner this time as it spooks the horses)

Coffee and snack provided. Warm fire if it is cold. Don't come if it is pouring rain.

Look forward to seeing everybody.

David Dannenberg

This is GOOD news. We should make an effort to have consistent attendance. I will not be able to make it either - I may be playing in the snow in Maine! Tom, John, Rob, Lou - any of you can make it?
Ride on

I attended the JAN work day and it was easy and semi-fun. And I felt like I did a good deed. Can I get an "atta-boy?"  ;D  Unfortunately I think I will be up in VT also doing some skiing/boarding, finally, and won't make it... However, people, this is where the rubber hits the dirt!!!! Volunteer work! I know this is not directly for PMBA and may not benefit our riding trails per say, but it is obvious this is a great way to show that we (PMBA) are ACTUALLY going to get involved and help out in the Wissahickon. I strongly encourage people to attend if at all possible. OK, I rest my case.... Lou

I'm pretty sure I'll be there. I posted on the Wiss forum looking for a slowpokes ride on Saturday at noon. In that there's trail work that morning, it only makes sense to be there to help, then ride afterwards.

Success!!!

It was windy, but not too cold, the sky was blue and the sun was shining. The chipper made tons of noise, the meadows are clear of the rogue trees.

I believe good times were had by all!

PS We even found two cell phones that were lost during the day, so no losses.

It was great helping out David and FOW, but it took my toll. Holy cow I'm fat and outta shape! Sorry I bailed on the ride. I took my new bike with me and planned to meet up with Lou, Chris and a bunch of others at the Valley Green Inn for a 2:30 ride. I got down to the covered bridge on Forbidden Drive and it became quite clear I wasn't going to even make it to the trailhead. Hope you guys got a decent ride in. I'm off Monday the 19th for President's Day. Maybe PMBA can get a group ride together then.

As promised, I've posted a blurb on the Pennsylvania forum on mtbr.com. Please check it out an let me know if anything needs to be edited or modified. Once we feel the post is sufficient, I'll also post it on the Save the Trails forum on mtbr. IMBA sponsors that forum and I think we need some exposure there. Here's the link to my thread:

Very nice showing of support by PMBA! I don't know about anyone else, but I feel great after volunteering yesterday! Next time I cruise through the meadow on my bike, it will be awesome seeing the finished product of the hard work. Way to go everyone! Bob thanks for the great write up that Chris used on our Press Release.

Lou

P.S. Bob we didn't end up riding until 3 and it was a short ride. I was wore out!
