Where do you think you picked up a tick? I thought it was a little too early, I better start checking more thoroughly...

Title: Tick bite
Post by: DrSaw on May 03, 2007, 06:42:19 AM
Could be anywhere! I am in the Wissy almost daily biking or dog walking. Also with RIV, was in woods 5+ hour each day Friday and Saturday. Luckily I work with a large group of doctors, and was prescribed something immediately and went for blood work the day the bullseye spot was noticed on my arm.

it is never too early those f-in things are hearty.

i remember finding a deer tick? (the bigger one) on me in febuary or march once...

you really should give yourself a thurogh once over after every ride when washing down in the shower.

the little ones are so small! sometimes they just feel like a speck of dirt you just can't wash off....  :o

i am glad you got yourself checked out and medicated early dr.saw.

good lesson to everyone to check yourself (or better yet have someone else do the checking  ;D) after every ride.

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: Dmitri on May 03, 2007, 09:20:57 AM
The big ones are wood ticks, and they don't carry lyme. It's the tiny ones, deer ticks, who do. And they are tough to find.

A friend was diagnozed with lyme last year and there were few lessons to be learned from it.

One, is that it takes up to a month for it to show in the test. For instance if one is bit and infected in April, the tests will show him/her negative for lyme till May... So get tested regularly. It's not a huge deal if it's caught early but if it's let go it might have serious permanent effects...

I'm going to make an apointment with a doc and have it standing every two months to get tested from March till Nov. I've found deer ticks on myself back in Feb when we had warm days... Nuts!!!

Nasty little bastards.

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: lemingus on May 03, 2007, 03:26:14 PM
Thanks for scaring the SH*T out of all of us. I'm sure most of us will be doing thorough inspections of our legs and arms after a ride. Thanks for the heads up tho.

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: Lou on May 04, 2007, 11:43:45 AM
i got lymes 2 years ago. the small tick had bitten me on the end of my ... you know what. It was horrible. About 2-3 weeks later, i got violently ill and it was lymes. Dr. gave me some meds and killed it quickly... it is the worst pain i ever felt... all my muscles were drained and i felt like a zombie...

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: max on May 04, 2007, 02:05:26 PM
yeah i found one of the little bastards heading for my "unit" one time as well. under the spandex and everything.

so don't just check the arms and legs, GO FULL BODY.

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: squads on May 06, 2007, 11:09:40 AM
I went out for just an hour or so last week and caught a deer tick crawling along my arm when I was driving home.  They are definitely out there now.

i'm the friend dmz3 was talking about so i know exactly how you felt lou. was a real shitty may june and july last year. more than the muscle fatigue was the pain in my head. not just a headache, which i did have ever day, but my scalp actually hurt.

i was riding at mercer just yesterday and found 2 wood ticks on me. in addition to a post-ride tick check we should all be wearing bug spray and i mean the good stuff...100% deet.

that's the stuff i carry in my pack...unfortunately even after the lyme i don't use it nearly as much as i should

anyway...lets get this thread back on track. WHEN AND WHERE TOMORROW???

Do you know 100% when you've been bitten by a tick?

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: lanceh on May 08, 2007, 04:02:00 PM
Do you know 100% when you've been bitten by a tick?

nope. not all deer ticks are lyme carriers and in more than 1/2 of the cases you never find the tick. the biggest problem with deer ticks vs. wood ticks is they are so small that unless you're looking for them, and i mean really looking for them, you'll never notice it's there. that was the case for me. if you do find one and it's withing the first 24hrs or so of of attaching you'll be fine. it takes a while for the bacteria to make its way from the tick to you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_have_died_of_Lyme_disease
check out the caption under the picture "Nymphs are about the size of a poppy seed." we're talking super tiny compared to wood ticks.

i never even had a bullseye which is one of the dead giveaways for lyme.

typical symptoms are, but not limited to:
- flu-like fatigue
- muscle aches
- headaches
- "bullseye" rash mark at the site of the bite
- concentration/focus issues
- night sweats

Jon,
No risk of that. I'd be dead by then already, after half an hour on Indian trail!!! :-)

Post by: jpearce on May 23, 2007, 09:00:33 PM
Well, you guys whooped me pretty badly tonight.  I don't usually ride those trails that fast and can't do the climbs as quickly.   Hunter pointed out a while ago that he was 15 years younger than Nick - I'm 15 years OLDER than Nick and can't quite keep up with you younger guys - even if you are on singlespeeds!

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: Dmitri on May 23, 2007, 09:42:01 PM
jon, we commented several times during the ride that we would all be so like to ride at all that many years in the future, let alone at the pace and quality you got!

I hope you had good time with us never the less and will come back to show us how it's done!  ;D

Exactly! Tell that to Lou "I'm so tired from 5 days of riding I can't pedal" Harris!!!

After he said that could I possibly let him keep on passing me in his 45 lbs DH bike?!?!? If it killed me... Which it just about did!!!

Great ride, you guys all rock and know how to push the pace and ride hard!

Dudes that was an awesome ride! I really didn't want to do that much, I know, wah, wah. But I am glad we did that. Everyone rode great including you Jon! There's no need for any apologizing. I really enjoy group rides and don't mind waiting a bit, and it wasn't much waiting at all anyway! Can I get a PIIIIIIMMMMMMMMMMBBBBBBBBBBAAAAAAAAAAAAA????? See you guys soon. Lou

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: jpearce on May 24, 2007, 08:07:50 AM
I'm better on the lower part of the trails (behind VG and south) where it isn't so rocky and the hills aren't so bad.  We'll be out with the "slightly aging" group at 6 tonight at VG if anyone wants to join in.  Pace will be significantly slower than a Lou Harris ride(unless Gerry and Donna are riding their singlespeeds, in which case the rest of us have a chance), but we'll still have fun.

BTW - some shots of the Asheville trip are at http://picasaweb.google.com/jpearce08055/BikingInNC2007  We rose Tsali one day and Bent Creek another.  Great riding - kinda like Fair Hill - nothing technical, but wonderful scenery and some great downhills in the woods.  I crashed in Tsali and ripped up my right arm, which is why I was wearing the pads last night, but it was my stupid mistake on a simple trail.  There's easily a week's worth of riding down there - it would be a great place for a road trip.

I'm out; thinking about doing Neshaminy at 4pm instead, and if its a washout might just take the trail up to Valley Forge; boring but better then no riding at all...

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: Dmitri on June 12, 2007, 10:16:16 PM
Interesting proposition...I live and work minutes from it. and I won't be able to race this weekend, so pre-riding the course might be interesting...
but not sure if we should be riding dirt at all after this rain... all depends on how wll it drains and dries up by the morning.

Title: Wissy Wed AM Trail Conditions
Post by: DrSaw on June 13, 2007, 11:04:56 AM
Went out for a Sunrise ride (5:45a to 7:30a) wednesday AM. Trails are gret. Better than the condtions during the Rally in the Valley. And the repaired sections near the golf course and near Blue Bell Hill are fanatastic.

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: fishnchips on June 13, 2007, 01:30:35 PM
DZM, there's still a good chance I'll be riding Neshaminy tonight (6/13). I'll leave here (near VG) around 4 and be ready to ride at 5, depending on traffic. I've got one other taker so far.

I've missed the last two days to rain so I'm eager to do ride no matter what...

just to confirm; riding Neshaminy tonight at 5pm. So far got one other taker. I'm sure others will be floating around the course too if you want to check it out. And if it's really pouring I'll just urban assault the shcool on my SS.   Directions are on the Guy's Racing flyer:

Maybe. Fletcher mentioned a ride, his first in weeks since he broke his hand. I'm not sure if he checks the forum so I'll get back to you. I'm still trying to recover from Neshaminy, so I could use an easy ride.

Looks like I'm also on the "tick list".  Probably picked it up last Tuesday or Thursday out in Wiss.  Got the "target" marks on my stomach, which started to show up Friday and are now the size of a dinner plate.  Went to the doc yesterday and am now on Doxycycline for a month.  Hopefully this will be the end of it and I won't end up with future symptoms.  Geez - the things that we risk just for a few good rides!

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: Fish on July 26, 2007, 10:18:12 PM
K-Man is the best person to ride behind... I've seen him save some crashes that would have claimed mere mortals..  I recall doing about 25mph on downhill at Brandywine watching Krotee  doing a flying W (both feet off pedals and above head..) and correct and save it....    unbelievable..

Title: Re: Wednesday rides...
Post by: Lou on July 26, 2007, 11:04:05 PM
Yea he is the most talented crash/save artist I have ever seen. On my favorite trail at Whistler (Dirtmerchant obviously)  I saw him do a total side swap, bike one side, legs the other side, over a 10' table top at high speed. He landed with his gut on the seat and then bounced up on the bike like he meant to do it... I was stunned, but I was also thankful because I was in the air behind him and if he didn't save it I was done... He's the master....

I'll be there at 6 and I think Tom and someone else plan to be there too. I'm not sure what their plan is but I can imagine they'd want to head to the Indian, so if you're cruising down the path toward us my guess is we'd keep going that direction

I'm not going to be out long enough for lights.
